It makes sense. Really.

So, I haven't been around much, and that's because I've been studying for, taking, and passing the New York State bar exam, and I've been doing most of that from China. The reason I'm in China is because I'm taking part in the acquisition of a portion of a German medical implants company. By the middle of next month, I'll be a managing director, and, perhaps, CEO. I'm pretty sure I'll be the only full-time employee for a while (aside from the other managers), so don't be too impressed. A little impressed is fine, though. ;)

Now that the explanation for the absence is done, I must explain the thread's title. I'm going to be living in Berlin off and on over the next year at least, which means I'm apartment hunting. And since I'm going to be traveling around and out of Berlin, I'm going to need wheels. Or, more accurately, the company's going to need wheels. And so, I turn to you, NICO: I need help, from at least some of you.

First, the Germans. I know we've had a few American servicemen members stationed in Germany, and we must have some German members, as well. Can anybody point me towards a decent website (à la Autotrader) or, failing that, a reputable, trustworthy used car dealership? And, perhaps, a website for apartment hunting?

Second, the Jesda. What the hell should I buy? I need something reliable (it'll be my daily), comfortable (and big enough to seat a few adults occasionally), but not so big as to be unwieldy in Berlin. And on a budget of €8000-10000. Please, point the power of the pants this way and help a brother out.

Of course, I welcome the comments of anybody who's not a German or a Jesda. I just needed an eye-grabbing title.

Just to clarify, when you say you are "taking part in the acquisition of a portion of a German medical implants company" , may we assume you will not be returning to the US wearing breast implants modeled after Heidi Klum? ;)

I believe Jim (floghtingpoint) lived in Germany for awhile. He might be a good source for used car info. Hopefully he can chime in.

If I do, Bubba, I'll be stopping by your house first, so that I may haunt your dreams.

James- papasmurf lived there too, though without wheels. He has a couple of friends there still.

How about a used BMW 320d?
You can find it in manual, it wouldn't be boring per se to drive, and it gives off a business man's/company vehicle feel.
And I think you may be able to find one used for under 10k euros.

I'll look for them; I was thinking a 5 series, because the 3 might be too small. Not sure, though. A diesel would be great for the city driving I'll be doing, though. Thanks for the recommendation, Turbo.

It's amazing what kinds of cars and trucks you can run into there. There's a guy on GMI who sits in the bushes and takes snapshots of everything from Italian exotics to old Broncos and Silverados. People go to the trouble of importing the strangest vehicles.

Considering the cost of fuel, I'd look seriously at a diesel Jetta or Passat. I think Skodas have lower resale value despite being fundamentally the same cars as mass-market VWs, so you could look at one of those.

I think James S. is NICO's expert on getting along and around in Germany.

The Jesda!

Thanks for the tip. I first saw Skodas here in China, so maybe that's why I'm leery of them.

James, (papasmurf) lived there for quite a while. I am sure he would have some good advice.

Indeed.
Buying German while in Germany is my best recommendation. If anything crazy happens, there's mechanics that know how to fix them absolutely everywhere. VW/old Audi is generally the way to go if you're trying to save money.

Basically all the tricks and trades of American auto buying are alive in Germany (craigslist, Ebay, Autotrader, etc). You really aren't THAT far from America in the grand scheme of things.
The Jetta is really non-existant in Germany. Adults in DE have different standards than here. You don't need a full size A8 to make people fell comfortable. A Gulf or similar sized vehicle wouldn't put people off if you needed to drive them short (less than 2 hours) distances, so long as the people in question aren't the CEO of any major business.

Honestly, from what you describe, the gulf would be pretty good. There's a reason why its so unbelievably popular pretty much everywhere. It gets around the city well, it seats people well, and it parks well. All while being cheap enough to if you get the random ding, you don't feel TOO bad.
German cars in Germany definitely SEEM better than German cars in the US. Maybe it's because the cars in Germany are built in Germany instead of Mexico, who knows.
Also, sometimes there's car clubs posting up local events on craigslist.
www.sxce.org was a pretty good German Nissan forum (very much like NICO to where they didn't care what you drive) if you can speak German... although even if you don't they can probably help.
If what has been posted doesn't fill your needs, let me know and I can translate/help you find what you need! Where will you be staying?

Thanks, James. I'm going to check that club out. I went looking, but I couldn't find a German autotrader website. The advice on car size was valuable, and I think that's the direction I'm going to go.

As for where I'm going to live... no idea. Somewhere in Berlin. I think the office is in Tempelhof.

Try http://www.mobile.de/
The guys on that other forum would know pretty well too.

You can get a Phaeton for 9 grand!
http://suchen.mobile.de/auto-inserat/vw ... age=200000

Or a golf 1.4 TSI (170hp, 40.5 MPG on the highway)
http://suchen.mobile.de/auto-inserat/vw ... age=200000

Enjoy moving to the land of the manual transmission as well :)

Although I've never lived in Europe, I think James makes a lotta sense. My feeling that given that the price of fuel is considerably higher there than what we pay here, you might consider something small, plentiful ,fuel efficient, and locally built (so relatively easy to repair), reasonably priced and easy to flip when you're done. so perhaps a VW Golf diesel, or a 1 (or 3) series BMW diesel might be a wise choice.

Thanks, everybody. Great input; as usual, NICOs a ton of help. Surprisingly little snark, though.

I don't see any reason to be snarky. You asked a legitimate question looking for honest help, and you took a humble approach. When I read your initial post it made me want to help you. :yesnod :)
I also saw it as a challenge to think of exactly what kinda car fit the bill, and it was fun too. :]
