Hi, I don't know much about cars but I am slowly learning alot from reading forums and DIY guides. As of right now my car runs fine but the idling is not stable. I've searched the forums and got many answers to idling problems. Before I start working on my car I want to make sure I am doing the right thing. Below are some pictures of my engine. Please tell me if that is the AIV valve?

What is this black box for?

Is that the throttle body? If I want to clean it out all I have to do is remove the air intake black tube and spray like half a bottle of carb cleaner down there? Will I need someone to hold down the gas pedal so the throttle plate will stay open so I can spray with carb cleaner?

Are these black hoses the vacum hoses? I should look for worn out hoses and rips right?

The crack on my coolant resevoir is common right? Can I use some silicon and repair it or should I replace it with a new one?

What else do I need to clean or replace so my car can run smooth?

Are these fuel injectors?

My last thing is that I want to paint my valve cover. How do I take it off and is there a pattern where I need to screw when installing back the valve cover?

ok, you got it all right buddy, hold down gas pedal, spray it with a little cleaner, get a tooth brush or somthing and clean, dont go crazy with it

aiv: take it out, plug the lines, never look backand yes, that is the aiv

those are indeed the fuel injectors

the coolant tank, i repaired mine with rtv, works like a charm

yeah, check the vac. lines for cracks and leaks

to make your car run smoother, full tune up will help, thats plugs, dist., rotor, cap, wires (yours look fairly new so you might be ok), fuel filter, air filter, coolant flush, new oil and filter, change diff and transmission fluid

that should get you started

I just changed my spark plugs and wires recently. For the AIV how do I clean it after I remove it? Do i take it appart and clean the inside with carb cleaner? Thanks

for the AIV. You have a choice of either removing it and cleaning it (link: http://www.240sx.org/faq/index.html look for AIV servicing) or you can remove it completely (it serves no great purpose, hence it was removed from later models.) instructions for this can be found here <- also a good description of what the AIV is and what it does. I personally removed mine and did notice a slight increase in throttle response. Only thing is that depending where you live, a picky vehicle inspector might fail your emissions because it is illegally modified. btw, if you want to clean it, you will have probably have to clean it again every few years.

Another option on the AIV is you can remove the line going from the airbox to the AIV and put breathers on both holes. This way it is not coughing exhaust gasses back into your engine.

If you are talking about the black box that is in the 2nd and 3rd pictures above. I believe it holds the actual reeds that would need to be cleaned. The AIV system reminds me of those diagrams, I can't remember what they are called, where some rediculously complicated and crazy machine is used to do the simplest task.

So what do I clean out? The inside of the black box or the other thing next to the black box?

toss the aiv all it does is keep your car from destroying the environment until the cat warms up. get a plug for the exhaust manifold Nissan part #14052-21R00. buy a couple rubber caps for the open lines i think you need 5/8" 3/8" and 2 of the 1/8"

good luck getting that aiv pipe out though it usually rust fuses to the manifold.

get the seafoam spray can for the throttle body good stuff.

ok, the black box is an air collecter, to keep it from pulsing as much, i removed mine, pluged the rubber line to the aiv with an old CO2 cylinder, same thing for the hole on the air intake box, never noticed any problems, but throw that aiv in a bag and keep it somewere, incase you need it again.

oh, and btw: your getting rid of the black box and the metal thing, it is un necessary, and it messes up the maf if it blows exhaust into it
