I got my 1992 Q45 in February.. my very first car! And I bought it all by myself. I was really happy, but in less than a month, it had a busted hose. Well, my uncle always worked on my dad's cars, so I let him fix mine.. Bad idea! He messed up a bunch of other stuff in the process and so he had to go through and fix all that. Well now, he has everything fixed, supposedly, but he had to take the motor head off in order to do so. Now, all he has to do is put the motor head back on, but it has to be torqued down (?) or something.. Does anyone know how I can get the information on what the torque is? I heard it was different for each of the bolts or whatever on the motor, but I have no idea! Please help!!

I know, I know.. I'm just very frustrated because I can't find the info anywhere! I don't mean to be impatient, but I've been looking everywhere for the past 4 months. Sorry!

For all practical purposes the downloadable Factory Service Manual for the 1994 can be used for assemby and torque specs for the 1992 engine.

Download and decompress this massive top .rar file = 1994 Q45

http://www.phatg20.net/modules...id=62

Why were the heads removed in the first place, this act usually dooms most engines unless an expert is rebuilding.

We just replace engines rather than doing head work much more cost effective.

Thanks so much!! Yeah, apparently they had to take it off to get to the hose that was busted. It was like, behind/underneath it just enough that they couldn't reach it. Idk. I hope they didn't completely mess up my car!

the head(s) was probably not what was removed. your probably talking about the intake plenum. silver spider thing ontop the engine. all though its a pita to get back on for the first time, if you take your time, get the manual, and hook all the hoses back up, you should be fine.

are you sure you dont have the manual already. its either in the map box imbetween the rear speakers, or where the spare tire is in the trunk.

i dont think youll really have a problem with torque specs. just remember everything is aluminum. tighten with your best judgement.

good luck

Yeah, I think that's what they took off. They kept calling it the motor head, tho. Hmm. Weird. Maybe they just don't know what they're talking about? ERR. If I had the money to go get it done professionally, I would, but I don't. So I'm just gonna have to deal with what I've got. Thank you so much! I'll look for the manual and stuff. I appreciate everything, guys!

Try this site:

http://www.nissan-techinfo.com/infiniti/

All 1994+ FSM and TSB require a one day subscription.

And remember, in both cases, you may have to disable protective software like flash blockers, etc.

The download at http://www.phatg20.net comes compressed as a .rar file. You will need to Google for some shareware to decompress it.

I'm pretty sure that your uncle would have taken one of the intake runners off - not the head, but who knows. If you can take some pictures and post them here, it would help a lot.

Good luck!

If it's the plenum, this info from Q45.org will probably be helpful:

http://www.q45.org/plenum.html

You can also use the NICO search engine - red button along the top of this screen. Search for "plenum" in "post bodies" in the "Q45 Forum" and "Infiniti Online Mechanic". Search in "archived" and then "recent". That's 4 searches. You'll find a ton of info on plenum removal and reassembly.

Okay, so I checked out that site, but it kept saying stuff like "Don't over torque the bolts" and stuff.. how do I find out how much torque the bolts need? Sorry if I'm being annoying!!

The diagrams in Service Manual show the torque range for each type and location of bolt used in the vehicle.

Remember with a used bolt to err on the low side of range.

With the plenum bolts I always just tighten them until I feel them bottom out. They have very short threads and once they bottom out you must STOP IMMEDIATELY or breaking ensues.

Check out the diagram "Outer Component Parts" on page EM-6 of the manual. Looks like 9 to 11 ft/lbs.
