i fear the worst. i need to know if the video attached indeed indicate the "timing chain rattle" problem... and if so, what i would need to look for in terms of fixing it? i know removing the upper tension guide would help, but what else should be done?

http://gallery.thevboard.com/u...e.avi btw its about 1.8 megs

bump....I have the exact same sound, been trying to explain it to some people for some time on here and would really appreciate if someone could tell both of us without a doubt whether that's the chain (probably upper one) rubbing on..insert name of part..?

Thanks alot

yep very familier with that noise. Hear it on the altima all the time. I have learned from many techs that this noise has caused much grief for them. It has been deamed the mystery noise by several techs I have worked with. The noise eminates somewhere in the timing chain area around the 2 cam shafts. I have never chased this noise trying to repair it since I learned from other techs I would likely waste time and customer money trying to fix it. These other techs have replaced all tensioners chains and gears to no avail resolving it. I beleive it may be the cam bearing surfaces on the head but dont know for sure so not willing to try and sell a repair for that. What we do if a customer comes in concerned about it is explain what I just said and then bump the idle up about 100 rpm so the noise is not so pronounced.

Allthough that same noise has been known to be from the upper guide over the span between the 2 cams. That guide can be removed if its there. nissan issued a campaign or tsb to remove it and discontinued using it since it was deemed unneccesary.

i actually thought it was that, but in my attempts to remove the noise by removing it, well it didnt stop...im actually hearing it a lot closer to the upper tensioner, and btw while i had the valve cover out i checked both chains for slack and well they dont have any...it was tough...so i dunno...some people said that just to replace the whole timing chain area with guides and tensioners... while i think this is a ridiculous idea since the chains looked fine since they are not slacking, im not sure i have any options....damn it...

hmmm raising the idle well, i dont think its gonna work for me because i just "tried" it (with my foot on the pedal to get around 1k) and it still does it. is ther an actual way to check the whole timing chain area without pulling out the motor?

I had the same exact thing on my altima. I never took it in to get it checked out, but sold it a year later instead. I never had any problems on it and it made the noise for as long as I owned the car (from 58k to 84k miles)
