I attended the SEMA IAS in Atlantic City this weekend and got some good advice about the swap. David from Smiley-Garage and Freeman Lee were very helpful. The Exedy 240 guys were cool too. The guys from APC were complete jerks. They knew nothing about anything including thier JDM 180SX!-- BROOKLYN

p.s. Yes, my name is Brooklyn.

I'm in Lexington Park, Maryland. Its south of Waldorf. I've decided to sell my 90 and 91 Hatchback 240SX SE's on AutoTrader (Zip code 20653) to concentrate on my 92 coupe. Are there any 240 clubs in Maryland I'm kinda new here.

I just dropped in a 96 motor no wiring mods needed! You may have a sensor or 2 that dont need to be coinnected but they are for emission IIRC.

Thanks Top Speed! Any suggestions for me while my new engine is still uninstalled? What ECU, Cams are you running? I'm thinking CAM, Headers and whatever else b4 I install...

If you are in a state with no emissions BS laws. Pull all the emissions crap off. Like he Vacuum mess on the back of the head. And the EGR on the intake manifold. And Degrease and clean the hell out of the motor and engine bay. Also replace any lines that you can. It is a pain when the moor is in!

I am pretty sure that you have to change out the upper intake manifold and distributor. Other than that, the swap should be very straight forward.

Please tell me why we would need to do that? I dont see any reason you would need that at all, not to mention i have never, ever heard that nor did i need it to drop a s14 ka into my earlier s13. The motor sizes are almost identical.

I am doing the same swap now. I have done some search and talk to couple people. The best way to do it is only use the engine block from the s14 KA, use everything else from s13 KA. Swap the intake, exhaust manifolds, use the distributor from the s13 KA, and swap the long block, the head (i think the power steering, alternator should be the same, don't know yet, will know this weekend) from the s14 into the s13. That way, you don't have to worry about emission or wiring problems. Hope this help.

O ya I forgot about the distributor. You need to use the s13 distributor. You can change the intake mani but I never have.

The reason you would swap intake manifolds and distributors is because when manufacturers made the switch from OBDI to OBDII they changed the sensors, injectors, and distributors. Nissan may or may not have done this, but the one S13 I have seen with a S14 motor had swapped the intake manifold and the distributor.

Okay just out of curiousity....I'm new, and not really informed yet...but why would you swap the newer engine into the old engine? Cars.com rated the S14 as having the same horsepower as S13, which is 155.....is there mechanical advantages to the newer engine? thanx....

IOWNEFIVE:

I have a 97 ka24de installed into my car. My chassis is an '89 but I switched complete harness with a 91, so our cars are basically identical.

For easiest "Plug and Play":

Mechanically the only thing that needs to be changed is the distributor (to keep your current wire plug.), the exhaust manifold (O2 sensor is a different size and the downpipe on an S13 has two outlets whereas an S14 has one large one. I changed the throttle body to utlize the S13 TPS sensor. You can remove most all of the vacuum lines, I kept the egr solenoid and egr since I didn't have any block off plates made. The heater hose routing is slightly different from the S13.

Electrically: there are two harness that are under the intake manifold. one you keep, one you discard. be sure to block of the large electric vacuum solenoid under the intake. the harness you keep will be obvious, it plugs into your '92 factory harness but the 97 has two wires that the 92 doesn't. the only splicing I did was for the egr solenoid, but if you are not running egr then disreguard that. I am also running the 97 engine with a 91 ECU. I am sure I left out some things but other members of the board could probably fill in. I have pictures of the complete installl, and some of the progress. If you get really stuck, email. but I don't think you will, it is really straightforward.

PS the 97 intake does NOT have to be removed!

oh, one more thing.

the OBD I or II crap is not relavant since you are swapping into a pre-OBD car. I have no OBD related stuff on my car and it runs just fine!!

Unless you're moving to a DE from an E engine that's it (and since this is a '92 model he 'most likely' isn't). Thanks to the popularity of the SR swap KA engines with trannies can often be less expensive than overhauling the old engine; less time consuming as well I would imagine.
