1988 Nissan Pulsar SE starter will work just fine. Mine just plugged right in with ONE NOTABLE EXCEPTION THAT I WILL SAVE YOU THE TROUBLE OF HAVING TO DIAGNOSE!

When you put the starter on, you'll be under the car on the right side. One bolt hole securing the starter will be quite obvious on the transmission and facing you. The other one is on the other side, and is a PITA to get to. If you've popped the starter you know the one I speak of.

Now, with the Pulsar starter, you're going to need a new bolt for the NEAR SIDE. Some of the starters, like mine, only come with one threaded hole on the starter. Fortunately it's the hard-to-get-to one on the far side. What you'll need to do on the near bolt is get one long enough to clear the transmission and the starter, and just get a nut to stick on the other side and use two wrenches to tighten it up instead of just screwing it into the starter.

Other than that, yes. They're the same starter and fit in flawlessly. Just make sure you specify it's an 88 Pulsar SE or the "one point eight" or "dual cam" version. I just did this yesterday, so let me know if you've got any questions.

Edit: alternately, you might be able to take that little plate section from the RWD CA18DET starter and just stick the rest of the Pulsar starter/solenoid on that. I wouldn't bother with it though, since it fits just fine with the bolt/nut.
