Ok I have searched for hours and I cannot find a starter number for my rb25det starter . The only number I found on here (nicoclub) was part number 2444514, however when I called my local Napa parts store they couldn't cross match this number . Where can I buy a starter from ? Do u guys have part numbers? and from where? I would prefer to buy from a store oppose from online.

-thanks

I don't doubt anything gawdzilla posts. He's on his game! If you aren't sure, just go to NAPA and have them look up the part number and bring it out to you.

I bought one of the Napa Starters and everything bolted up perfect, but still just getting the solenoid clicking. I am still working to see if I am not getting a proper ground to it somewhere. But has anyone had any experience with the starter being bad out of the box?

sounds like a low power voltage battery. It may have juice to power on electrical power but not enough to kick over the starter. the cranking amps. get a jump!

I'm about to test this again today and will have pictures. So far this is my last shot at a cross-reference for an RBstarter. I've read about the late 60s Datsun starters, the 02 Legacy Starters, and both were not even possible. I will show a pic of my old starter and new starter next to each other by getting this part number to show people.

napa part numbers, listed under 1968 spl311 with 1.6 4cyl

RAY 2444514 (standard)

RAY 444514 (premium)

i am running the exact starter in the link i posted above, and have been for the past ~2 years. it works for rb25det trans. the solenoid is slightly larger and shifted over a bit, but everything bolts up without issues. buy it and use it. it's fine.

That part number (2444514) is the same for the late 60s Datsun 311? Because I had the guy pull that starter and compared it to mine and the size of everything is different. Solenoid is positioned differently and didn't look to interfere, but the gear that contacts the flywheel was different and the "hump" covering the gear was larger. Will this work without causing issue?

Also, even though it's from Napa could I just look up that 311 and find a starter from anyplace like O'Reilly's or Advance Auto Parts? All different brands of starters should be the same dimensions I assume. If that's the case I'll still go pick one up and compare with pictures. If you're right, and I hope you are, I'll at least put some pictures in this thread to ease other people's minds. Sorry to sound like I doubt you, but I'm sure you understand the frustration for such a simple part. I can find anything else under the sun for this motor but the darn starter with ease.

Ok, well thanks for the response and exact model of car versus just a part number. If I knew the car it came out of I probably could've found this thing alot faster.

its not the same shape as the original but it fits nicely. The bolt spacing is correct and so is the engagement for the flywheel.

Sadly, I am looking for a new starter too. I called O'Reilly's and NAPA and neither have it in their regional warehouses. They said they could try to special-order it for me. I think the easiest option might be to simply have the RB starter rebuilt at a local electronics shop.

Looks like Becky's car (RB25 in a S30) is now in need of a starter as well.

Can anyone help?

Said it above 3 years ago and I'll say it again. I've been running the NAPA starter for over 5 years now. No problems.

http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Catal ... 0280396074

Looks like you can still order it. $89.99 + ship/tax.

Also check out the youtube video someone already made and posted to this thread:

BTW it may not be an actual starter problem for some of you. Do some searching on the ignition switch replacement for our cars. the switch wears out and the car will not turn over until after multiple tries. i would only blame the starter if you're getting some mechanical problem sounds. Look to the ignition switch first if it's electrical and obviously not your wiring/batt

Bumping an age-old thread here! I sourced one of these NAPA starters and, upon inspection, it has an 8-tooth pinion instead of an 11-tooth pinion that the stock RB starter has. Gawdzilla, did you notice that on yours or did you just install it and have no problems? Do you think it will mesh with the teeth on the flywheel if it has a different number of teeth on the pinion? Besides that, the motor is much larger but the mounting holes and lower part of the casting appear to be of the same dimensions. My fear is that I will install this thing, turn the key, and it will break off a few teeth on the flywheel and make a bad situation worse.

:werd: I saw those...They are conveniently priced at 2X market value for similar starters so I was trying to avoid getting bent over. I will probably end up breaking down and shelling out for that starter though. I don't have time to work on this thing anymore.

This is the starter that I purchased as well, but it only has a 9-tooth pinion gear vs an 11-tooth pinion and it is 27.5mm in diameter vs 34 mm in diameter of the stock starter. I am worried that there will be a problem with engagement and it will break teeth off of the flywheel. Can you update on whether this starter worked on your RB or not?
