So I was driving into town to get a couple of new CVT Solenoids. It seemed to be running fine, till i got 10 miles down the road, then I heard a clunk in the engine, and lost all power, i got on the side of the road and waited about 4 hours for a tow truck.

A brand new VQ35DE runs roughly $7000 from nissan. Used engines about $2500.

I dont think that the block was cracked, but I have my pathfinder up at my school right now, so i can use the auto shop to rip out the engine, and rip it apart.

If the block is still good, I can rebuild it. Will 350Z pistons and rods work in the Pathfinder VQ35DE? It seems that I can get CP pistons and Eagle rods cheaper than OEM pistons and rods. The only thing different about the pistons are that they are 10.5:1 comp, vs the stock 10:1, will this effect anything?

I was thinking about just getting a used engine for my pathy, and rebuild the old VQ35 for my Z31, with low comp pistons, and the other goodies.

Mine died cause of a bad oil leak. My dad drove it alot, and never checked his oil, the day i decided to drive it, the rod gets knocked through the side of the midplate (upper oil pan), and one small hole in the block, or so i can see. Im in the process of removing the engine, which is worth its money to have someone else do it... Mine only had 100K on it, which angers me alot. VQ's are supposed to be one of the toughest engines in nissans line up. My friend that works in the nissan parts dept, has never seen a VQ go out, and he's worked there for over 6 years, and owns 2 VQ cars himself.

It could have been a timing chain problem, cause the chain was chattering alot. The VTC solenoid was also going out, which leads me to think that it advanced the timing too much and knocked the intake valves into a piston.

I've heard that the connecting rods are not as strong in the 35, as they are in the 30. This could be a reason. If I get a new block, Im gunna rebuild the engine with H-Beam con rods.

Has anyone done a VH45DE swap in a pathfinder? That is the only decent engine i can pick up locally, and i can get it quite cheap.

I've wondered this myself. I'm told the transmission is the same as the Q45, so hey why not? At least, I'm 98% sure it is in the VG33E R50s -- I assume it'd be the same in VQ pathys.

I see this a lot. . I've always been a VQ fan, but I dunno. . I feel better about my VG purchase. :o

But I'll want another R50 eventually, and it limits me severely.

Our family's Pathfinder has over 50,000 miles on it, and we drive it at least once everyday, and it's still running strong

dude my engine has 200k on it and just barely started ticking. im gunna get a new engine for it pretty soon. not that i really need one, i just wanna swap in a new one with all kinds of cool stuff like cams and such. no point in modding a 200k engine thats been abuses. oh and it has an oil leak, thats why im also replacing it. lol

200K is nothing for VG. I've got 230K on a turboed 9:1 VG in my maxima. Im starting to wonder about the VQ's tho.

I got a used engine with 63K on it, im swapping it right now, hoepfully everything goes good. Although the R50 is a big pain to work with. I have to pull the transmission first, the oilpan will hit on the front diff and axles if i just tried to pull the engine.

200k for an abused offroad engine was alot. it finally bit the bullet on january 27th and already put my new one in. the old engine has sucked up water, mud, dust etc.. it failed because the hole in the crankshaft that lubes the bearings clogged up and the bearings busted. threw the 2 front rods into opposing cylinders and cracked the hell out of the piston skirts etc.. thank god for an auto or else i woulda been in trouble (was going 75 mph at the time) the new engine is out of an 01 X with less then 50k on it, removed the valve covers and intake plenum, it had no EGR and the intake runners were spotless, same with under the covers. i got a hell of a deal on it.

oh and you dont have to pull the transmission, its a lot easier to take the 8 bolts holding the front diff in and just let it rest on the LCAs. you'll have more room then me to work with since your not taking out the torque coverter with the engine like i had to cause it locked up. (piston skirts parts and rod parts not where they were suppose to be lol)
