The salesman says that you buy the car and if you don't like it you return it. Yeah...

Yea, that's really weird. Who doesn't let you drive a vehicle you're interested in buying? WTF?

That is bogus. I had the same type of salesman (24 year old male when shopping for a mustang gt with 3.73 rear end & brembo) don't stand for it. Cause a scene or make a call someone above them. If you're going to give someone 25k, they're going to have to let you drive the car.

I would suspect that their customer service may be poor if the dealer acts like this.

Yeah, go to a different dealer, then bring the car back to the initial guy and flaunt your new ride in front of him to make sure it gets through that he lost the sale.

just go to another salesman...someone there will be hungry enough to you on a test drive.

the issue is that they aren't taking you seriously...raise some hell, then they'll pay attention to you

OP,

you can't fix one of your broken cars with 1/2 of your proposed budget  to become a reliable Daily-Driver?

I doubt he has the time available to tear a car completely down and rebuild it so that it's completely reliable. Maybe he could pay someone to do it, but then it'll cost more. Plus he's probably going to have to get a loan for the new car. You can't get a loan to fix a POS.

I'm just getting tired of fixing and dealing with old and crappy. I've been having a really bad string of luck with used vehicles the past year or so. I don't want to keep messing with someone elses junk. The times of getting good used vehicles feels over for me.

I have been told no on test drives twice, both were walkin's. Hyundai Genesis and BMW 135i. I did eventually drive a 135i.

How are you engaging the dealer? I like to contact the internet sales dept and make an appointment letting them know what I want to see and drive.

Having worked for a dealership before - Show them you're serious. Sometimes salesman will blow you off, because they may think you're there for a joyride. I've done it myself, so it's just a common misconception. Now granted, I never did that to one of my customers personally. Usually I would say "Let's go fill out a credit application" first, then that would usually scare away the ones that were just there to waste your time.

Now on the other side of the coin - It's poor customer service to turn a customer away, but car dealerships are careful with certain models because they attract joyriders. Just tell them you're serious about buying the vehicle, but you're not filling out any paperwork, or even making an offer until they let you take it for a test drive. If they still refuse to let you drive it, tell them you want to see their sales manager. If that doesn't get you the keys, then tell them you're going elsewhere and they just lost a sale because you were ready to buy that day. Don't let them pull you back in at that point - if you get to that point, just walk away.

By the time I have to escalate a situation to someone's manager, that is the end of our working relationship. If I get that far, I'm requesting a different salesman.

I've never done that though, I always just go to a different dealership.

That's why I suggested that. Usually in my experience, if you request the manager, that salesman will not be working with you any further. I have had the opposite happen when we purchased the Jeep, but the sales manager was involved during the rest of the process, so the process went a lot smoother with him involved.

When I worked at the dealership, our sales manager would usually take over the deal, but still give us the commission made(since he was salaried).

The only thing I don't get to drive at our dealership is the GT-R. It pisses me off but it's a good thing. It would be my luck that I'd be out for a test drive the minute an elderly driver in Sun City went color blind and blew the light :couch
