So I took a long trip this weekend and put some mileage on the G... Saw a few brethren on the mass pike weaving in and out of traffic in a black G coupe... Couldn't catch up without breaking a few laws... Anyway I get back late and I knew I was low on gas but the warning hadn't come up yet so I didn't worry about it.

This morning I do my usual launch up the onramp and as I hit the highway the warning light comes on and tells me I have ----- miles till empty..... Ruh Oh! How much gas did I just burn up?!?! So as I have a small panic attack I see the number blink 4 miles... 8 miles... up to 20 miles. I figure the gas just sloshed to the back and the sensor hit 0...

So I go out for lunch and it says 20 no biggie... I'm on the way back and it says 17 and I am driving conservatively when it goes back to ---- miles to empty. So I'm going to milk it to the gas station but it seems awkward that it would be this flaky...

It's not common for me to let the tank go below half a tank but this seemed odd to me. Anyone else have any similar experience?

My car typically has 2 gal left when the nav screen says - - - -

20 gal tank, and will take 17.5 - 18 gal at that point.

Just fill up ASAP so you know how much you have when your car gets to that point. As always, there can be sediments in the gas tank so you don't really want to spend a lot of time down that low.

Sounds pretty normal to me. It tells you what it calculates from the last few minutes you drive. If you drive it in city with more accelerate/brake it will drop. If you baby it it it will go up higher. You don't realize it when you have more gas because you don't pay attention.

Watch out driving the car almost empty. The fuel pump gets lubricated by the fuel what goes thru. If there is no fuel there is no lubrication = fuel pump failure.

Made it to the gas station no prob... didn't feel any loss of power so I doubt I did any damage. Cars only got 7K on it so I'm not to worried about gunk in the tank.

I've noticed the same thing about miles to empty - it'll say like 10 miles left, but when I fill up I only top off at about 18 gallons. I think they did that on purpose to help people from running dry...

You probably didn't come close to empty. I've gone to o miles left several times and never got more than 16.8 gallons in it. Infiniti went a little over the top on the conservative side with this, but better than being stuck on the side of the road!

Low fuel warning light comes on with 3.5 gallons in my tank. The navigation is a POS IMO. The miles to empty is a LIE and the input is a joke.

I usually know how many gallons have been used on my trip odometer and then do a mental calculation with a low MPG like 16.

The light comes on when the signal from the senders equate to 15 liters. Which is 3.9625807853722264 gallons.

+1 yep

there is always like ~4 gal left once the light comes on...

so simple math at worst case, 16mpg x 4 gal = ~64 miles til you stuck on the side of the road

I have driven 103 miles with the fuel light on...

I pumped 19.7 gallons when I pulled into the station..

and just the other day I did

91 miles of city/highway mix and pumped 19.6 gallons..

I love to play my odds lol!
