So after selling my 240 I bought a lexus sc400. Needed work, for example... the rear main seal went out, needed engine mounts, transmission mounts, Windsheild, radio, etc. After working my butt of my senior year of high school I finally got it driving well. Later on it had a few problems and recently the power steering pump went out. So I started thinking about it, I really really miss my 240sx. The Sc is a awesome car... but If I plan on building it Im going to go in debt and it might be a expensive car to maintain. Not something a college student wants to do. With all that being said I was offered a 240sx in trade for my sc400. Now this 240sx is one that ive admired for quite some time. Curently the car has Type X Rear valences (sp?), Side skirts, Spoiler,Taillights, Apex I exhaust, K sport coilovers,5ziegen 17 inch fn01r-c's, and a cusco strut bar. The car defiantly looks good, seems to drive decent ( ka24e ) it needs some work to be 99% perfect. So I leave you with a pro's and con's list and ask your opinion. I posted this on nico as MOST sc owners wish for all 240's to burn in hell and I know that s chassie owners respect these cars like their own.

Sc400 Pros: Clean exterior, Runs well besides the power steering issue, All stock and unmolested, Ive put work under the hood so I know the car inside and out.
Sc400 Cons: Power steering issue might be just replacing the pump, 198,000 miles, Interior is ripped up and defiantly needs work along with the gauge cluster needles not lighting up ( somewhat difficult to see speed, gas, rpm), needs tint in the rear window, Major gas hog, Insurance is high.

240sx Pros: Somewhat clean exterior, Interior is flawless (black), whole suspension has been rebuilt, Type x exterior ( besides front end is 93),Apex I exhaust, Ksport coilovers, 5zigen wheels, cheaper insurance, .
240sx Cons: 158,000 miles, Sunroof is custom needs a bracket, No radio, front end is somewhat banged up, Ksport coilovers ( ive heard bad things ),has a few dents.

... and I know pictures would help alot, but I don't have any at the moment. Also one thing, when it comes to building each car school isnt a issue as Im on scholarships, Its just the 7.50 hour paychecks I receive.

Pics?
I'd take a SC300 over a SC400 anyday.
I would go with the 240.
Besides isn't the SC400 automatic?

Me, I like 240's more, so I'd go with 240's. Both are going to be money pits regardless. When I had a S14, everyone thought it was a SC300/400 anyways.

If It was an sc300 with a 2j then I'd say keep it and add a turbo.. But since its a gas guzzlin v8 get rid of it.. Plus the 240 you're looking at has lower mileage.

I would keep the SC400. Do you know how many import drivers are scrambling to swap V8's (LSx and VH45) into their cars? And you were smart enough to buy the ONLY affordable JDM sports car that came with a V8 from the factory.

Keep your V8. Suck it up on the maintenance. Open that exhaust up, do a manual conversion and slam it to the floor. Bam. Happiness.

meh. I can see both sides of this book.

The 240 is a car people grow to love. The SC400, with its immediate torque and luxurious feel, already has you reeled in.

its all on your preference man. . .I say go 240 because in there stock form, they are fairly simple to maintain, and are getting less and less expensive to repair. . . The Lexus car IS the luxury of Toyota. And no offense, but after my celica threw a rod, I have no love for Toyota.

The 1UZ-FE is a whole different beast than the 5S-FE. It's pretty reliable and actually overbuilt...

OP, go sign up at ClubLexus.com. They be able to help you figure out all the cheaper ways to maintain your car. For example, ALOT of JZA80 stuff is a direct swap onto the JZZ30 chassis and surprisingly... Supra parts are cheaper than Lexus parts.

Think of it like this: You basically have the luxury version of a MKIV Supra with a V8 in it. Strip away some of that luxury and the car becomes a lot of fun. Personally, I would not downgrade to a SOHC 240. Why? Because either way you look at it, that SOHC is gonna have to come out of that car if you want more power. Either you're gonna rebuild it of turbo or swap it for something else. But in your SC, you ALREADY have a good & strong motor.

I know you're in college and the 240 is the more appealling 'kiddie' car. But when you reach my age, your opinion changes and the Lexus comes a better value...

I'd keep the SC, the 1UZ is a great engine, I loved my '93 LS400. Mine had PS issues too, but just turned out to be a dirty filter in the reservoir (even after the dealer wanted to charge me $900 for a new pump!).

This would be like selling a Supra to get a SOHC S13. What kinda sense does that make?

I dreamnt about owning an SC300/400 growing up. Sporty, luxurious, they had it all. Everytime I see pictures like above, I want to run out and get myself one. Then reality hits and I realize how much money was probably poured into those cars and I remember again why I love my little 240 so much. True as you get older, your taste changes, but I know me and it's been 14 years since I first bought my first 240. I know I won't be happy unless I have a 240 sitting in my driveway. The grass always seems greener on the other side. OP you just have to admit to yourself which car you really like better and the way it sounds to me is that it's the 240. Sane people will wonder why you traded a luxury car for an economy sporty car. Then again all sane people wonders why we pour thousands of dollars into a car they'd probably just sent to the junk yard.

dude, Toyota's run forever... They outlasted my Nissan, that's all I have to say dude. On top of that, you already have the nice quite silent ride of a Lexus. I.e. Have you ever heard a Lexus door slam? ...exactly, didn't think so, bc they don't make any noise. Just, if a college kid is lucky enough to have the choice you have, stick to your best option and feel lucky for what you have; whatever it is you end up with.

your going to college dude, do whatever is guna be more affordable to you. when you get out of college you will have time and money to play with and you can get yourself another lexus if you feel you really miss yours. If you like this 240 and it makes sence to you do the trade. But def set fire to those piece o crap k-sports and get stance coilovers and you will be golden.

@ S14toRPS13 - I agree, cost of ownership may be an issue. SC's are more expensive to maintain that 240's. That is a fact. But the OP is not the only college kid with an SC.

Like I said, OP... head over to ClubLexus and they can help you get a handle on the real world maintenance costs and issues with your car. As I hear it, alot of the JZZ30's stuff can be DIY if you're determined. It's not like the Z32 or anything...

In the end, of course, the decision is yours but try to be fully informed before you decide.

Allright so Ive chosen to stick with the SC, I think I only wanted the 240 due to its a little bit cheaper to build. Plus I guess I missunderstood the owner and some of the parts I included on the list are well not included with the trade. Anyway Ill defiantly be back, as im still wanting to build something for Auto x. Thanks everyone, Im actually a member on clublexus but if I ever posted something like this I would of gotten flamed : /...

I'm on ClubLexus, too. They seemed pretty friendly to me when I asked something similar. Surprisingly, alot of them are former 240 owners who upgraded to the SC when drift scene starting giving 240's and their owners a bad rep...

Here's another perk: in the eyes of teh b*tches... Lexus>>>>POS Nissan :naughty: :yesnod
