I have to put a Rear Main in my 32. I work at an alignment shop, part time, but cannot take the bay for the time period I know it will take me while accounting for "what ifs" that could come up. The shop next door quoted me $350 in labor plus parts to go in and replace it. They will put back whatever I want new or used in the process for the same labor fee and have the car back to me in the same day.
I have the option of saving that labor and putting into other parts if I simply get out on the driveway and do it myself. I will not have air tools, lift, welder, and other fun shop goodies available to me....much like when I did a similar operation in a friend's front yard in Maine while stuck there in my RX7 with bad trans and had to swap five times in two days to get home.

I know the "how" to do it, even though I haven't with this specific car. I have the time and the space. I just am not sure I want to deal with the headache for that price. I think I may need to turn in the man card.

$350 sounds like a decent price to me. I admit, I haven't had to do that task, so I'm not sure how much time it would really take or how difficult it would be without a lift. But for reference, I was quoted that much (for labor) just to replace O2 sensors.

Regarding no air tools, I JUST recently learned that their are electric impact wrenches. I'm planning on getting one of those soon! Would have made changing my shocks much easier.

Yeah I would do it myself. The hardest part is aligning the transmission splines and the top two trans bolts. Then again I'm a broke college kid so not much of a choice for me. I guess it's a personal choice if ya got the green lol

I've been under the car several hours today. I was actually stunned and amazed at how many different covers and braces are under this car. I was doing some work to the belts and scouting the future possibility of getting into it. I am not even certain now that my RMS is what is leaking. The PS is leaking bad enough to be making a heck of a mess everywhere. It still appears to be oil at the little weep hole at the bell housing though.

On the plus side, I have room in the garage to do the job inside, in case it rains.....
