Ok, to make a long story of me being stupid short I lost the key to my 89 240sx and it was the only one I had. Am i just screwed or can I have one made by somebody by giving the vin# or the keycode#? I dont have the keycode# and if its somewhere on the car let me know so I can find it, my local nissan dealer can only make keys a few years old off the vin but i was hoping other dealers out there arent as gay as the one in Lincoln, NE. Thanks a lot.

I don't know much about keys and vin#'s

but... If that don't work out,

at junkyards if the ignition switch or whatever it's called(it's where u stick the key into) is still on the car, they might have the key tied to it. (I'v seen that on a couple cars here, one of em a 240)

So u can just get the ignition switch and locks of a car at a junkyard and put em on your car. Probably a lot of comotion but hey... what have you got to lose.Hope that helps

I think locksmiths can make a key if you take out one of your lock and take it to them. It'll cost more if they have to open up the door and take out the lock themselves.

i thought i lost my key once, i called the dealer, they only keep the key numbers (its on a sticker on the inside of the glove box) for like 10 years. when i found it, i had 2 copys made. a locksmith can do it as was mentioned earlier.

What if YOU(the individual car owner) have the key #, can you still have the dealer make the key after 10yrs, or do they trash the key pattern w/the number?

Pissed me off when I went to replace my key because I didnt have the key code on record nor was it in my glove compartment. I had to use the jacked up key I had and make a bunch of duplicates. Gets really annoying jiggling the key everytime to start the car.

Call your local dealership - most of them are able to get a key cut from the VIN number. If your local one can't, start calling other dealerships - I know of 2 here in SoCal that keep records dating to the early '80s

Before 95 or 96 you need the 4 digit code to get the key cut, it located in the glove box. 95 or 96 is when nissan started to store VIN# to cut keys. This is what I was told at the local dealer when I lost my keys to my first 240. Nick

you've an 89. the keycode is on a sticker in your glove box. only other place I can think of would solve your solution is to get a new key cylinder and key that matches it.

my car is unlocked I just need to be able to start it, but i ran across another problem, my car is completely stripped and I took the glove box out to have it rewraped in black leather and never got around to it and now i cant find it. I think im just going to go with getting a new iginition switch and key. Thanks again.

i went to a dealer 3 years ago when i bought my car with my vin. dealer said they don't have any records of cars 7 years old. i just went outside to take a look at the sticker in the glove box.seriously, i have no idea what key code everyone is talking about.i see info relating to how much weight the car can carry...~600 lbs. tire pressure, and other stuff. i dont see it say KEY CODE. am i looking at the wrong place?

wow, didn't i say i already tried that but my local dealership doesnt keep them on file for a car as old as mine, anyways i got a new ignition switch w/ a key for 30bucks. I know you can go to the dealership w/vin and proof of ownership and get a key made, if you own a nissan only a few years old here. My local nissan dealership sucks ****.

Just call up a lock smith. I think I paid $40 for mine when I bought the car with no keys.
