As much as I love my 240, I'm starting to think more and more about something more practical (getting old ?). And something 4wd so I can go skiing this winter.

I drove friends 99 A6 2.8 Quattro today. This car is fricken awesome. Having always thought that those are expensive and beyond my reach I looked some up and found this perfect example of the recent deal.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...10997

I know this one isn't quattro but made me think I could find one within 14k range with decent mileage.

I'm now trying to get the whole picture with this car:reliability, insurance, personal experiences.

please share.

AUDI A4 1.8T QUATTRO 96-99 THESE ARE AWESOME I ALMOST BOUGHT ONE BUT I GOT F'D OUT OF THE DEAL SO I GOT MY 240. THEY ARE FAST AS HELL, ALOT OF INTERCHANGABILITY WITH VW AND SUPER RELIABLE JUST A BIT EXPENSIVE TO FIX AND INSURE.

<--- 6'4" and A4 just doesn't seem right. Plus price difference is insignificant. Most of people I know that have truboed audies had to have some turbo related work done before 65k.2.8 V6 30V should be enough and reliable.

Insurance wise, I'm currently paying 180$/mo for my 95 240. This is kick-azz insurance so it is so expensive. 0 points on the record.

I'd be comfortable paying around 250$/mo but not more, you think I could get a good policy for 98 A6 around that figure ?

A6 IS HARD BECAUSE IT IS CONSIDERED LUXURY SPROT SEDAN AND THE A4 IS A LUXURY SPORT. THE A4 HAS ALOT OF ROOM IF YOU HAVE EVER BEEN IN ONE IT IS GOOD FOR TALL PEOPLE (DESIGNED BY THE GERMANS), BUT ITS UP TO YOU. THE AUDIS DO HAVE TURBO PROBLEMS BUT THE 1.8T HAS NOT BEEN RIDDLED WITH THEM PLUS IT IS THE SAME ENGINE PLATFORM AS THE 1.8T GTI.

Another great example. Looks like price is low coz tires/brakes are worn. http://autotrader.com/findacar...t=300

VWVortex has some fairly active Audi forums. You should be able to get some good first hand info there.

I'm a big Audi fan, despite owning Nissans. I know many Audi A4/S4 owners and all of them love their cars. Just need to be sure it was well maintained because they are more expensive to repair than Nissans. Check out http://www.audiclubna.org. It's the National Audi club. Nice group of folks and plenty of info.

Thanks for the link. Seems like a nice site. $$$ membership though. I need some free forum for now to ask questions about what to look at when buying used A6.

I happen to be a member, as they have awesome track events at the major race courses. I think you could surf most of the site and forums without joining. I've never tried their forums, so I can't vouch if they are as good as NICO.Good luck

The 1.8T is not fast as hell. Don't belive what you hear. If those peopel think that car is fast they never drove the S4, and hence have no idea what "fast" is (they probably think stock 240 is fast). But practical that car definitly is.

They are not. 150 and 170 crank hp depending on the year. However $450 GIAC chip will get you near 180 whp.

If I was looking for a fast car, I'd be on KA24DET forum right now asking about what turbo kit to get. I just want something bigger, 4wd, reliable and more luxurious.

As much as I hate thinking about selling my 240 it is gonna happen soon - pragmatism dictates.

If 2-3 years down the road I'm still not a father I will buy myself another s14 as a cure for midlife crisis.

I really like the S4's. There is a nice red one around here that runs consistant 14.0's and it's bone stock. I wouldn't say they are fast, but the power delivery seems to be smooth.

S4's are sweet. i got a chance to ride along in one. It was chipped and that was all. Shot up this big hill near my friend's house like it was nothing. Very quiet and smooth. I like raucous and loud though. :D

My friend has a 99 a4 quattro and it is quite nice. Good power, comfortable ride, and lots of fun at the auto cross.
