My friends dad had a 75 280Z a while back, and when it quit running, they left it chilling in their back yard. Recently I was askin them if they were gonna make it a project car (they have this habit of throwing V8's into all manner of cars...) and they said "no, but if you want it you can have it".

So I scored me a great car, with very little rust (perhaps the only thing California is good for). It has some car cancer on the exterior of the rear hatch, but that is easily repaired, or even replaced :P The rest of it seems good, altho I've still not gotten the carpet up for the floor panels, but visually they looked ok.

Anyways, just wanted to post, and im gonna be lookin through tryin to find some cheap and effective upgrades (the shocks are blown, but the rest of the suspension looked pretty good). One quick question (that I'll most likely find while searching) what's a good brake upgrade for these? The plan is to gut the car completely, and make it esentially a no frills race car. Caged, minimal interior, no more heavy *** 280z bumpers. It's getting a built LT1, and I need some serious stoppage for sure :D

Anyway, here's some pics:

^ Yes, that's a birds nest

congrats on the Z, as for brake mods, there are many options, from a toyota 4pot, toyota 4 pot with vented rotors, outlay 4 pot with vented rotors, complete willwoods, and even a swap using Z32 donors, whats your goal and how much are you wanting to spend

the goal is to stop the car as fast as it accelerates. My friend's dad who built the motor thats goin in says that the LT1 he built should be closing in on 400 horsepower.

So thats what I need to stop :P

Do the Z32 ones bolt right up? Whats involved? You dont have to use the whole hub and convert to 5 lug do you?

the Z32 swap is a kit sold by discovery parts, I seem to recall the kit at about $1200 which is basically front and rear brackets and lines, you have to aquire your own rotors and calipers, and I assume it includes the 5 lug swap so you'll need new wheels as well, 400 whp is pretty common for the turbo L6 and most people in that power range run the willwood kit form arizona z car or modern motorsports, be forwarned that if your getting 400 whp the u-jointed half shafts become a weak link, and you didn't state the year of your car but if it's got the r180diff you might want to consider upgrading to the r200 while your at it

I said its a '75 (it has the r200) Anyway, the willwood kit may work, but does it include discs for the rear? How much does it run? Im trying to be as inexpensive as possible... I don't make a lot of money, and the motor is setting me back a pretty penny Prolly gonna go with something less expensive... Ive heard good things about the Toyota 4pots, but wonder if it'd be enough stopping power...

edit: also, what can be done to improve the halfshafts? Is there beefier axles that you can buy?

After doing some price shopping, I may just go ahead and get the Wilwoods, they seem like a decent deal for what it is. The car's not gonna be moving any time soon, so I should have some time to save up... no sense in being able to go stupid fast if I can't stop!

arizona z car sells the front willwood kit for about $750 which includes everything but the recomended master cylinder, I personally can't bare the thought of adding toyota parts I've heard mixed reviews on them, as for the halfshafts, there are a number of cv shaft upgrades available, I personally adm running the Z31 cv shafts with the modern motorsport adapters, and yeah I tend to put my money into going fast first and stopping second I considered doing the V8 but I'm glad I kept the L6 the brakes however, I kinda wish i had spring for the 5 lug wilwood kit, who knows I might still go that way later

Right on dude, i appreciate all your input :D

I was gonna go the L6 way, but when they told me they had a basically race built LT1 they'd let go for 2500, I couldn't pass it up And I know the guy does excellent work, so it should be sick...

I just gotta get the rest of the car ready.
