I'm lazy. How much does that cost?

I'm gearing up to finally doing a 5-spd swap, but I have neither the time or the patience to have my car down and out so long. So I will probably pay a shop to do this. Should I find and buy the parts myself or just have the shop do it? What ,as far as labor costs go, should I expect to pay?

Your cheapest bet would be to find a manual transmission from a salvage yard. Call around and ask what shops would charge for this type of procedure. I might even go as far as to question the mechanic who would do the work - ask how familiar he is with both Nissan transmissions. You might even see if you could take it to the dealer (although quite a bit more expensive) but their mechanics are certified on your specific car (all models including AT and MT).

A swap this extensive also means that this is not a direct "plug and play" install. There would be many other wiring harnesses/mechanical parts to purchase along with the transmission in order to fully install it.

I am 98% positive the dealer won't touch it.

I went to a local transmission shop and they wouldn't touch it. They didn't even like the idea of swapping another auto into my I30.

You're best bet is to find a wrecked manual and pull your parts or have someone do it for you.

You might even be able to pull the ECU and other related components so that you don't have to trick your car into thinking it's an auto!!!

In retrospect, if you want a manual transmission that badly, buy a new car. Swapping transmissions is only asking for problems down the road.

Thats not really true. If its done right the first time with all the correct parts then it will be just as reliable as his auto. Your not asking for trouble by swapping to manual.

Besides, my car is in way too good of condition to consider getting another 4th gen. I'm going to do it right with a new ecu too...I don't like half-*** stuff
