forecast .....

You seem to be the ONLY one here besides the renowned Q45Tech who's become "intimate" with the bottom end internals of a Gen 1 Q45 motor.

I cannot find a thread here where your experiences were discussed. I come in search of :

Where did you procure the parts?

Crank, Bearings, Rods, Pistons, Rings, Caps, Gaskets?

Did you go new or made do with what was available?

Costs ... approx?

What machining if any was made neccessary to block and or internals?

Is there a definative information source for the proper procedures and precautions to follow?

Why did you choose to go this route?

Would you do it again? Why or why not?

If anyone else cares to elaborate that has the enthralling experience of doing this or watching some one suffer thru it - please feel free to blab about it :-)

Thanks to any and all who chime in.

Wow the pace of life on this forum is insane. I spent yesterday by the pool trying to soak up the end of summer and I miss so much!

I'll answer your questions in reverse.

No, I wouldn't do it again. Well maybe. It was a lot of fun, but not the most effective method. I learned a ton and really bonded with my car. I'd do an engine swap today though since it would be faster and cheaper.

I went this route because at the time it seemed like the only option. I didn't have a clue how to source a working pullout and I wasn't ready to let the car go.

I memorized the engine rebuild section in the little Q bible before I started. I have rebuilt other engines before, but never a V8.

I had the heads ground, resurfaced, cylinders honed, crank welded and gound.

$1700 at the machine shop, $500 in parts $500 in rings and gaskets, a few hundred in misc tools.

I let the machine shop measure everything with micrometers and tell me what was within spec and what needed replaced. I reused the crank.

Everything came from Scottsdale except the rings and gasket kit.

SoCal: You should buy the zero-mile crate motor, ship it and the Q to Forecast, drop a couple G's into the Kentucky economy, and VOILA! A no-mile Q45... Possibly the only one in existence. :D

Well folks - i found my solution !!! Im a very happy guy right now.

Called the peeps over at infinityparts USA - Joe was not home :-)

They helpfully looked into the part numbers for the block, crankshaft assembly, rods and bearings - all the same thru 1996 as pointed out by the illustrious duo of AZHitman and 90Q45Blue

Oh man - major stoke-age .....

I pulled the trigger on that 1994 Factory 0 mile motor - its on its merry way to a deserving home.

So who needs a pristine set of 1994 Q45 heads? LOL.

Well done, SoCal!!!

I'd say keep the new heads and longblock intact, just swap your peripherals and accessories!

Hrmmm .... dont know if thats "allowed". will my intake bolt right up? Prbly many bug a boo's with that - Id suspect.

What was "de-tuned" on the 94's from the very 1st gen Q45's?

Is that ALL ECU and TCU issues or lower compression / diff cams / valves etc...?

Search the posts on that one..... I remember hearing about it, but I cant recall for sure......

I know part of it (and probably most of what you feel) is in the transmission..... Since the 90-92 model years started in 2nd gear, there is a higher 1st gear for quicker starts when you floor it....... 94 started in 1st, but has a lower 1st gear for a smoother ride........

Everything else should bolt right on....... Make sure while your doing it you R/R everything...... New hoses, sensors, and make sure the injectors are good..... You want this baby to last as long as possible........!

Siamesed ports, disc valved injectors, no sodium filled valves, other knick knacks. Better low end torque, emissions and idling.
