when I turn the car on and shift into reverse or drive the trans kicks into gear forabout 20 seconds then it's like the car goes into neutral, and after every time I turn off and re start the car, it does the same thing like there is something resetting every time,

has anyone ever heard of this before? and if so, then what could be wrong?

It could be a low fluid issue or it could be something with the torque converter. Check the fluid level and such.

most of the time, at transmission problems are a fluid level. especially when your talking about it switching gears. either the actualy solenoid that controls with direction the fluid goes is getting a jacked signal or its just plain bad and routing the fluid as it sees fit

17+ years is a long time for a AT transmission to live, was it replaced in past?Have you and previous owners exchange ATF at 30k intervals?

Common problem is reduce ATF flow thru in rad heat exchagers, when was this last flushed clean? Reduced flow starves the rear planetary and burns it up!
