Well, winter is over and I’m taking off the snow tires and getting new tires for these16in rims.

These rims were Greg’s that he sold me last summer. He had 255/50/16 on. I went to my tire guy, and he said that I should put 225/55/16. I like the idea of the wider tire, but he say’s that I won’t like them. I know what the answer is going to be but which size should I go with?

More important is which tire will you go with? It's the only part of the car that touches the road. Don't skimp.

You should be able to go wider with a decent tire. I'm running Michelin Pilot 235s on my 15 x 6 1/2 turbines along with Q45tech and some others. Yours are 16 x ... 7?

Love that wheel of yours! If I didn't need to put bucks into suspension work, I'd be shopping for some of my own.

Louie - Your tire guy is an idiot.

those are rental fleet-size tires, and they'll do nothing for your load rating , lateral grip or handling.

Plus they'll look gay.

255/50/16 is such a sweet-spot in terms of all-around performance, ask Dennis.

Drawbacks? SLight "tracking" over lateral grooves in pavement and a bit noisier than the pizza-cutters from Granny's Plymouth Breeze he's trying to sell you...

Will 255's fit on a 8.5" wide wheel? and are they ok to put up front?

Absolutely the best rim width, provided the offset is correct.

Z32 TT rears are a prime example of such wheels.

But, would that work on the front of a s13 240 The setup im going to have is 8.5's with 245's on the front and 9.5's with 255's in the rear. Think it will work?

Yes...

Go with the 255-50 tire lou... Youll love em, you get a MASSIVE amount of rubber!!!

Get the best you can afford.. Go to tireracks descision guide and look at the highest rated ones......

255 mm = ~10 in. No worry on a 8.5" rim.

Well, I'm getting 255s. Not many choices. My tire guy only had two, Dunlop SP Sport 8000, and Yokohama Avid V4S. I’m going with the Yokos. According to the Tire Rack, the Yokos have higher customer ratings and longer wear. I have a feeling that next time I have to replace these, I will have to go to a different tire size because the 255/50/16 won’t exist. So let me have my fun now. The next set will probably have to be the granny tires, as Greg said.

No Yokohama AVS dB S2? A much stronger tire.

Get it from tirerack if you have to. The Avids are a little weak and a granny tire for sure.

Well it looks like the choices in this size are already greatly diminished.

Tirerack is running a special on XGTH for $149 each. The Pilot Sport is $236.

Say bye bye to performance 16" tires.

AVS dB S2 only goes to 245/50-16 with a load rating of 96. Probably more in that size (including the Avon M500) and 7" is the minimum rim mounting width recommended by tire rack.

I can vouch for Tire Rack. They offer shipping directly to an installer who will mount and balance them for you. It was really slick - I liked it - checked with the tire guys beforehand - they knew Tire Rack and called me when they arrived - mounted em and I was all set. Was a real clean transaction.

Hold up...

There HAS to be more choices than that in that size. I'm not a big fan of any Yoko's as I had real bad experiences with my set.

Check TireRack and see if they can source the Falken Ziex-512. $73 each from their competition, and I LOVED my Falkens. A lot. A WHOLE lot.

As I recall, you had the made for Discount Tires 420 in 245/50-16. A known bad tire for the Q. One member wrecked his son's Q45 in Montana when one such tire blew.

As a side note, the Avids are especially bad in the rain.

Tirerack only has about 8 tires in 255/50-16 in the top two categories, and no Falkens.

I guess you guys don't like the Yokos. I was looking at the Tire Rack ratings, and the Yokos was rated the best in that size. I told my guy about the Falkens and he didn't like them much. He said they're don't balance well. I saw alot of weights stuck on those rims, Greg. Where they hard to balance, Greg?

Dunlops have a misearable history of performance on Q45 starting when they were an OEM alternative in 1994. There is a TSB from back then on them.

I read http://www.tirerack.com/tires/...1=yes and the chart http://www.tirerack.com/tires/...c.jsp to conclude the Avids were not up to snuff, except for Park Avenues.

The only Yokohama I would get is the AVS db S2.

Hate to say it, but it sounds like your guy has limited stock. Surely he can order in a set in a few days?

If you are in Jersey, and not doing high speed summer runs, I would look at the XGTH. Quite frankly, based on the tire rack query in 255/50-16, they are the only tire I would consider. In 245/50-16 you have a few more choices. My advice is don't skimp on construction and quality. The only remedy is replacement sooner than expected of the bad choice.

Lou - Those weights were the result of some horrible experiences with the Yokos. 9 balancing attempts in 8 months, which was unacceptable in my book.

Brians right though, I had the YK420's which have since been shelved as a bad experiment IIRC.

I'd disagree on the Falkens. My balancing issues with them were basicallty the result of the abuse I put those poor things through. I still can't figure out why my Q goes through rear tires.

Tire Rack does not carry Falkens. I got mine (for my old 1995 Q45) from Victoria Tire. Do a google on them or let me know and I will find their web site ...

OK this is what I'm getting. My guy couldn't get the Falkens so I ordered them with Dicount Tire. $324.86 shipped. If there good enough for the Hitman, then there good enough for me. Hopefully I get them next week and I'll post pics as soon as the new rims are on. Thanks for the tips guys. What would I do without NICO.

That is pretty darn good! Which Falken and which size? Greg and I tried the Falken Ziex 512. Mine were 245/45-17 and cost $100 each.

I had the 512's on my car for the last year...15,000 miles and really like them for both wet and dry conditions. The backs are totally bald, but the fronts still look pretty damn good (about half tread life) and that is without an alignment or balance since the day they were installed under of course extreme hard driving conditions. I know they had to be way out of balance by the time I put on my 18's, but I have been very lucky with my car not being so sensitive to tires being out of balance...at least until I got my 18's installed, but thanks to balancing correctly its all good now.

i think you guys convinced me to seriously look at the falkens since i am sooo due for new rubber. i'm also not too thrilled with the way my yokos wore. my fronts are down to nothing and i barely put 10k miles on them!!!! can't beat that price either!!!

My current front 235/60/15 Michelin Pilot H4 have 39,800 miles [new ones on rear]-----they will be retired in a few weeks ........mixed front and rear service roughly 50/50.

But they got rotated every oil change.
