I love racing my I30. It's a 96 with 245k miles on it. I've lost quite a bit of power in the past few months, but what I'm really worried about is killing the engine.

What can be done to extend the life of the engine whilst getting high performance out of it? I'm not capable enough to do a full rebuild.

I'd love to be able to say I have 500k on my engine, I've changed to forced air at say 300k and it's still running strong.

Am I just crazy?

Even a well maintained non stressed engine will start showing problems by 250-300k due to all the dry starts [piston ring wear]. Easy to get a Million miles if you almost never shut it off [just for oil changes and minor maintenances..............drive 24 hours per day as BMW did with Mobil 1.

Measure the static and running compression of each cylinder and look for excessive leak down rates [valve seats and valve edges].

How much oil does it burn in 3,000 miles?

My 311,000 mile Q is ok just not as it was at 100k.

To be quite honest, I don't know how much it burns in that time fram. As much as I pride myself on my knowledge of cars (or at least more than the common person), I can't use a dip stick for the life of me. It always have oil or transmission fluid (respectively) half way up the stick.

I'm fairly certain that there aren't an leaks on the engine. The transmission does slightly from the bottom seal. Not enought to drip, but enough to coat the underside with a thin black film.

I'd rather not have to buy a newer I30. I drove the 5th gen and truly didn't like it. The throttle response was truly lacking.

If I can bring mine back to life I'd like to. How do I go about testing the pressure on the cylinders? Sadly to say, I've never opened up the engine.

all nissans do that dip stick trick. i look at 3 a day at least. my suggestion would be to put the dip stick in and pull it back out and TURN IT OVER and you should be able to get an accurate reading. and remember, when the oil is marked at the bottom of the hash marks of the dipstick, that is between 1/2 and 1 full quart low.
