Can someone explain the difference between Short Ram Air and Cold Air Intakes?

I know this is probably as dumb a question as they get, so I apologize in advance for my ignorance and appreciate your helpful answers.

short ram puts the filter in stock locatio, but eliminates all the extras (air box, resonators)

Cold Air (CAI) pits the filter dirrectly in the path of outside air, and is sold as an attachment for the short ram, or as a complete intake system.

Short rams are shorter,

A notable company that uses both is Injen. They have a short ram intake, and a cold air extention for the short ram that makes it a cold air intake, which is just a 100 dollar piece of pipe.

Short rams usually are for applications that cant use a full cold air intake and is just in the place of the stock airbox, due to space contraints or whatever.

Thanks for the replies. That brings another questions. What are the advanatages of one over the other? I'm looking to install an intake system mostly for better performance, not for racing application. Any suggestions?

Thanks again

Short ram produces better throttle response. A CAI will give you more top end horsepower
