Well, I finally got my JDM transmission, new smaller Diameter-heavy duty drive shaft and a newly designed transmission cooler installed! What a difference in the ride as far as no vibrations what-so-ever and how much more quiet the ride is.

The old transmission had 258,000 miles on it and so did the drive shaft. I found the drive shaft on line from a shop in Conneticut. It's a unique heavy duty smaller diameter drive shaft that was taken from another nice Q that was wrecked. It's not supposed to warp so we'll see.

The transmission cooler I got wouldn't fit so the Mech got a new kit that is installed in front of the fan. Looks good and it's new. As long as it cools the transmission oil I'll be happy.

the ride is great and soooo much more quite. You can believe what you read when someone writes about a big difference. I bought all good Infiniti stuff and didn't scimp out, so I'll be expecting some years of pay back.

My 92 Q45 now has crossed over 259,000 miles and I love it.,....

258,000 miles on the original transmission? that is awesome, please share your maintenance history of it with us.did it have a transmission cooler, and did it finally die or did you replace it because it was getting tired?

My past threads talk about the history. In short, I got the car from a older lady who took care of it with reg maint at intervals suggested. The car did not have a transmission cooler until I put one in when I bought the car, thanks to this forum. I have since been going over the car with a fine tooth comb fixing and replacing things.

The transmission and drive shaft simply lasted that long on reg maint. with an owner who was prompt and didn't skip suggested time tables.

That's why I love this car. I've checked all the dealer work and only the fuel pump was replaced. The chain guides were "looked" at but not replaced. Please, no return comments on the chain guides...

This new drive shaft is smaller and guaranteed not to warp and looks different. If I can ever figure out how to attach pictures(If I ever try) I could show you.

You've checked every dealer record concerning the transmission [258k]? Many owners don't even realize the transmission gets replaced as they do it while in warranty in a single day visit] and never made a big deal about it in 92-96 before the factory got wise to excessive warranty cost............look for a 2 line transmission update code N/C - a case when the Q stayed overnight.

If the transmission has a pan drain plug it has been replaced as oem new 90-92 had none! Same with vent holes on the bell/tc housing.

Another hint is to check the TCU and see if it says its a reman.

I actually did dig a little about the transmission with the dealer, Infiniti & the prev owner and I'm sure it was the origional. Checking all the records, looking for what you said verifies it was never changed. I think it's pretty amazing, but looking at it on the floor, it actually looked pretty sad. The drive shaft showed plenty of signs of it's age. The wear around the bolts(probably when I started driving) that bolt it to the transmission where getting nasty. The transmission mount didn't look all that great either, glad I replaced it too.

That's all over with now and I have what I wanted. I intentionaly got the smaller diameter hardened drive shaft to see the performance difference. Call it a bug up my rear to try something different.

I will have to send Wes some pictures so he can post them if I can't figure it out. I'll get some pics of my beast tomorrow. You'll see the 259,000K engine..

Well, .. Ok,.. According to the prev owner, a wonderfull woman of God, a mechanic looked at the guides and found them fine.. She chose not to have them changed. Since that time, through the years, she has "prayed" over the car, even since I've bought the car.

Since that speaks for itself I prefer not to continually hear about my "special" Forest Green 92 Q45a blowing up on me. I have faith! wing

The car has been seriously well taken care of and the proof is in the parking lot.

Of course there is the fact that I have 259,000K on this engine and I don't want to do the guides if I plan to replace it in a year. If it hasn't gone yet then the guides are either "ok" or in pieces in the bottom of the oil pan. Either way my Q is running sweet and I'm not worrying about it.

Now if you have a 100,000K Q then I would certainly check the guides and switch them out....

Next time in Baltimore, I'll stop up in Timonium and check out Qship96. I Visit quite often.

Where can I get a heavy duty drive shaft like your and how much would it cost. I was seriously considering a reman driveshaft from FCP Groton (a source that was also recommended by you), until I read this post. What are your thoughts on FCP? Would you still go for it if the hd driveshaft isn't/wasn't available?

SFBayQ45, You can get the reman drive shaft for 325.00 plus shipping from FCP in Groton, CT. That reman is a smaller diameter drive shaft as well and has a year warranty.

FCP in Groton, CT gets it's drive shafts shipped from Powertrain Industries right there in Garden Grove, CA 92841. (714) 901-3611. Try calling them direct. The part number is 3192-310(for a 92 Q45). Powertrain has a stellar rep according to everyone I spoke to that deals with them. Haven't heard of a drive Shaft warping or failing. Now Q45tech says he really hasn't seen a reman that hasn't warped there at T-3 in Atlanta, so it's either or. Of course how many of those were from Powertrain? His words of advice should be noted though.

I did do alot of homework and went with something I believe will work just fine and due to all the checking I feel I made a good choise. Only time will tell and I guess that's what this club here for. Sharing info and experience. I think Power train will get you something that will work and it is a smaller diameter drive shaft as well. It is listed as an Infiniti drive shaft. Make sure you give the correct year of your car and if it has traction control.

You can also get a brand spankin new one from Joe who has them shipped from CA as well,(at least I think he does) They are around 850.00.

I'm confident either way you go will work just fine for you.

Could you elaborate on this RED? Does it warp right away or is warping only a concern after extended use? I'd be happy if the reman driveshaft last for another 100K miles...just in time for a new (used) replacement '05 Q45.

In one of my past threads when I was asking questions about drive shafts and transmission's it was brought up that after a period of time, not right away, he noticed that some of the remanned drive shafts would warp. After extended use they didn't last as compared to the new ones they installed. That was from instances seen at T-3 in Atlanta. Basically a warning that eventially that could happen to me a year or years in the future. It was because of this that I did so much homework on the matter and checked things out, making sure I got my stuff from a good source.

I'm happy and don't think I will have any problems. Hope that answers your question.
