My story: about 2 years ago I had a machine shop assemble my short block, I didn't know any better and didn't check their work (reputable local machine shop)... Well 1200 miles later, I was cruising down the highway and I started loosing power, give it gas and it just started choking out... Looked behind me and the highway was completely covered by white/blue smoke...http://www.nicoclub.com/forums/thread-icons/mad.gif....

Fast-forward about 18 months and I finally got off my a** and pulled the engine apart... I then tore it completely down and brought it to another machine shop, they immediately spotted the problem... Ring gap was way too tight! so I had them bore/hone and hot tank the block and I reassembled it this time!

Engine

Bottom End:-84mm supertech pistons (DO clear squirters!)-Pauter rods-Polished and knifed crank-ACL race bearings-OEM oil and water pump-Lightened stock flywheel-All balanced together-Centerforce stage 2 clutch

Head:-All port/gasket matched-No butterfly valves-Slighted ported and polished exhaust ports -270deg 8.8mm lift regrinds (both exhaust cams)-Tomei valve springs-All seals, keepers, retainers, and seats replaced-New timing belt

Turbo Set-up:-Real garrett gt3076r (.63 a/r)-Custom manifold-3" V-band downpipe to 3" RS-R exmag exhaust (no cat)-Synapse 40mm Wastegate with custom screamer pipe -Synapse BOV- Ebay s14 FMIC- KA throttle body (gasket matched)

Fuel/Ignition-SDS em3-4f-1000cc precision injectors-3bar MAP sensor-walbro 255 pump-NISMO adj FPR -300zx fuel filter

Went to the dyno yesterday and made a bunch of pullsMade 280whp at 12psi 350whp at 18psiand finally, with the wastegate at its highest boost setting 380whp and 300 ft/lbs at only 21

and my nasty engine bay

sweet!! Good to hear you are back up and running strong!! So over everything you were only out a set of rings, pistons, and an overbore?

Excellent news "Jake", but there's plenty more power to be had. After looking at your dynograph, I see the results are the results of something that was conservatively tuned. Did you leave the program the way I set it or did you and the tuner make some changes? Other than that, you're looking good and congratulations as they are in order.

How is the response of the 3076r on our CA?

Hey thanks guys...And once i get a boost controller she's getting turned up to around 27-30psi

Bacardi- i was out a piston set, machine work, bearings, a gasket set and time!

Dee- Yea its tuned really conservatively based on the dyno guys recommendation, It averaged around 10.9-11.2 a/f on boost, and on that graph the guy said the chop at high RPM was likely spark knock so we pulled a degree of timing and added a touch of fuel at that boost level and it smoothed out so I assume he was right...When i get a boost controller i'll be heading back for another session and maybe a gallon or two race gas just in case! What A/F would u suggest shooting for?

Sulik-Response? as in.... spool up time? or if im sittin in full boost RPM and punch it? or between shifting?

Yeah I think he was talking about spoolup. When does your boost come on full hard

do you have pictures of how they knife edged your crank?

Well you got a 500whp capable turbo on a 8:1 c/r 1.85liter with bigger cams and a big manifold....I would say it comes on strong around 4250-4500rpm But spool up figures are kinda useless IMO, all you have to do is downshift and BAM your in full boost as long as your above 4500rpm... unless you have a gt42r or something crazy but then your prolly not looking for a nice daily driver powerband...

But I can say this... When is does spool up it hits hard and fast! and there is no lag what so ever between shifts!

Also my powerband is STRONG between 4750rpm all the way to 8500 rpm so thats almost 4k rpm to get retarded haha

And to anyone who hasn't been in a 400whp s13, but shoots for that goal, I would suggest only 250-280whp until you get used to that then take little 30whp steps up to 350+whp cause s*** happens real fast at 350+whp in a S-chassis

And sorry no pics of the crank.....

perfect.

Ah sorry my english is not perfect.

Yes i mean the spool-up time.I think that a 76r is very laggy on a CA....

My 35R with .63 rear housing comes onto full boost at or around 5000rpm. I love it where it's at, but one of my sentra sports the same turbo as you, but I'm going to go for a smaller back housing to compensate for the long gearing. before you go back to the dyno, give me a call and I'll walk you through a timing trick I use to give the car more down low torque while transitioning to your sweet spot.

As has been stated, you've got some tuning issues in the top end. With that low compression ratio, I would feel very safe leaning that out to more along the lines of 11.5-12:1 and that would still be VERY safe IMHO and gain you A LOT of HP. With as rich as you are, I would bet that is effecting your timing as well and if you can lean it out, you'll be able to run more optimal timing as well. Even with the boost you're at, I'll bet that motor has another 10-20whp and wtq in it just from fuel and timing changes. Your tuner is a bit TOO conservative IMHO, there is no reason to have the AFR'S in the 9's, and I know for a fact that you can get that AFR plot to look like a flat line. And with all of that you STILL made pretty good power.

Keep an eye on this guy everyone, he's got a great setup, and with some more boost and tuning should easily clear 400whp.

ok guys... Big find... good and bad

I was cruising around yesterday and noticed a slight whistle and the idle kept rising up to about 1800-2k rpm, it was also back firing really loud on decel, sounded like my XD45... So i pulled over and the whistle was very loud now and idle was hunting between 1500-2000 so I get out and poke around for a vac leak, I only have 5 vac lines so I didnt find any leaks and drove home... Got home and was leaning on the intake manifold and the whistle stopped and the idle dropped and it died out...WTF? then I see that ALL of the Bolts in the upper-to-lower plenum are loose and 3 are MIA...ugh s***... Get new bolts, tighten everything down with loctite (blue) and go for a spin... Im pulling 20-21" mg at idle and it doesnt buck or backfire, SWEET! well im pretty sure im running even more rich than before...So im pretty sure I spent $150 on dyno time for nothing now... Hmm and it feels even stronger at 18psi (i turned the boost down) then it did at the 21psi level
