SO... I got locked out of my Q. Today was pay day. I wanted to go get my check, enjoy my day off, and enjoy a little joy ride.

I was downstairs in my room, hit the remote start button, and came upstairs and hopped in my car. I put the key in, but didnt get going yet. I had my camera so I wanted to take some pictures. I got out, took some shots, and when I tried to get back in, it was locked.

So I called a tow truck. They couldnt get it. Me and the guy tried for over an hour, even making new tools out of rods to see if we could get at it from the back door. And getting in through the door seals just wasn't going to happen. He commented on my taste in music, noting that "birfday" wasnt a real word. Hmm, he was right! But finally he had to give up.

I called a locksmith, and they came out and got in within 30 minutes. He tried the door seals but gave up pretty quickly. That crash bar has the Q sealed like a bank vault.

He then got a rod that went under the window, up the other side, then down again. It had a hook on the end which he used to pop the lock open, and within 2 minutes he was in. It was a sight to see after my Q had been idling for 4.5 hours. Even the neighbors came out to ask if I was okay, and stopped to check in as they drove by... "No, I'm fine. I locked myself out. yeah. THANKS."

My spare keys are at a friend's house in Washington. Waiting for him to get off his butt and send them.

SO... that was my day in a nutshell. I guess the lock timer on the remote start system tried to get smart, and locked me out.

Lol, I totally forgot about your keys, you forgot to get em from me when I left St. Louis. You never reminded me about em either.

Also, the remote unlock does not work at a distance of 2200 miles :)

It's somewhat reassuring that it took them that long to break in.

if the tow truck guy had a full lock out set, it should have taken no longer than 15 mins.

short of breaking the window, its very difficult to get in without special tools.

hahaha, one time when i was still towing, a guy locked his keys in his 92 mercedes e400. when he called in, he asked my dispatcher what the price was and she replied with "theres a $20 dollar discount if you supply your own brick"

first thing he said when i showed up- "your not really going to break the window, are you?"

he was amazed when all it took was 10 seconds with a slim jim.

I did the same thing a while back. Once you put the key in the ignition and turn it to the "run" position, the remote start times out, but the key is on, so it thinks it's time to lock the door. I let mine idle for about 30 minutes waiting for someone to come with a spare key. After that, I got in the habit of leaving the door open or window down if I have to go back after getting in the car - or just pressing the brake pedal to trip the auto-lock before getting out.

Kind of scary when your car's sitting there idling and there's nothing you can do.

If you think that's bad, at least you didn't lock yourself in the trunk with the remote disconnected like I did once. Talk about fun - black car in garage but in full sunlight in the trunk area. Mid-August - about 98F ambient. Good thing the door to the car was open and I had the package tray out. I was able to stick my head up through the package tray storage compartment hole and look out at the driveway and road. Didn't see anyone at all to come let me out - but finally I was able to get the cover off of the inside trunk lid and pull the release bar down that connects to the rear lockset. 98 degrees never felt so cold after being in that trunk for 30 minutes! Must have been at least 120 in there.

Glad it all worked out OK. Where was the temp. gauge after a 4.5 hour idle?

It was right below halfway, just where I like it. Purred like a kitten the whole time!

As soon as I got my car I went and got a couple spares made at the dealer. I've learned my lesson before. I once lost my keys on a road trip to Colorado. I had to have my girlfriend go to the dealer make me a key and send it overnight. It was a nightmare. Definately left a bad taste on an otherwise great trip. I think I got 2 made for like $4.50. An investment I was more than willing to make.

I did something similar with a friend when I was about 10, ever since then I've been claustrophobic, tight spaces make me hyperventilate :D

It can! :D

You gotta buy one of the products that my company provides the nationwide network for! Has remote unlock, remote start, etc., from anywhere in the country. And if your car is stolen, remote engine shutoff when it comes to a stop (at a light for example) and the alarm system goes off and the car will not start up, etc.

Look for the "Viper GPS Tracking" product from http://www.directed.com (now being sold at Best Buy and Circuit City and other places.)
