My guess would be the exhaust. My coupe and sedan have basically the same engine, but sound totally different. Pretty sure it is the exhaust that makes the difference.I also love the sound of the coupe!

Its mostly the exhaust. I played around with them once, popped a coupe muffler on a sedan and they sounded almost identical. The Motors are built very very similar, so theoretically if you could install a coupe muffler on any nissan with the 3.5 It would sound similar. Speaking of which... Someone here with a G37 coupe please remove your rear muffler and post a video of how it sounds. There are only 2 small resonators before the muffler, I think some of you would like it. Its not hard to remove. 4 14mm nuts and you're good.

It would sound similar...but not the same. The G has a different VQ35 tune for more HP. I would guess that the high RPM sound would be different.

On my 'G' I did a little test and confirmed it was the engine. I turned off the engine and no sound.

http://forums.g35club.org/zerothread?id=402036 check out that thread I made. The mid pipe doesn't make the sedan sound like the coupe. The rear muffler does. Its designed to make it sound distinct. Removing the mid pipe will make it sound close to a coupe though.

Ok I finally got a stock muffler.Just came from muffler shop and they told me that the muffler will not make my Murano sound diffrent. They also showed me that the Murano has a second large muffler in the middle. They said maybe if u take that off it will make some noise. So now I am totally confused. I will go get a second opinion tomorrow. Now in regards to mid pipe on Murano I am not sure if it has one. Any one know?

If you take that muffler off, it will sound different.

The trick is that you want it to sound the same or similar as another vehicle.

Not familiar with the Murano. However on many vehicles the large so called muffler is often referred to as a collector. If you have a v6 or v8 then the exhaust flows from the engine and then comes together in the collector and then out to a muffler and then maybe to a resonator (or two). On a true dual exhaust system then this doesn't fully apply (the collector). Many will do what is often referred to as a Camaro dual exhaust system. With this you will take the output from the collector flow it into a muffler that flows out to two exhaust pipes (or resonators).

Change any of this and you will surely have a change in sound. The best bet is to try to duplicate as much as you can of the target system, but there are so many other variables besides the exhaust system itself that you may not get the exact results you desire. In that case you may want to get a water proof speaker and record what you want it to sound like and play it back as you go down the road.

Murano V6. It has a straight pipe w/ cat , 1st muffler , 2nd muffler and 2 exhaust tips. Here are some pics.

i was the dude talking bout how the mid pipe makes the sedan sound different..but i was proven wrong with your thread...i was wondering if the muffler and mid pipe from a coupe would be a good ad-on to the sedan?..i have this guy who has emailed me with an offer because he is upgrading to an aftermarket exhaust system. what confused me is that the coupe has a dual muffler set up and the sedan is a single...would this combo from the coupe fit the sedan? and how much do you think i should pay for it..he said the mid pipe and muffler have about 25000 miles on it.

thanks for your help.

There is nowhere to fit a big@ss coupe muffler under a sedan. The midpipe from a coupe or FX will be a great idea for your sedan. Unfortunately It will still be different from the coupe. I believe a flowmaster 50 series (could be 70) installed in place of the rear muffler would make a sedan sound very similar to a coupe. check youtube.Give him $50 to $80 for the center pipe, depending how good it looks. A new one will run you $260

Yeah - too bad the coupe exhaust isn't interchangeable with the sedan's. That'd be sweeet.

The sound comes from the engine/intake/headers/ etc... Many cars that share the same VQ35de engine dont get the same exhaust note..

This is the best answer!!!

The G35 coupe, FX35, and 350Z (All with VQ35DEs) sound VERY similar. The transverse mounted VQ35DEs (Maximas, Altima SE) and some of the longitudinal (Murano, pathfinder...etc) don't sound like the FM/VQ35DEs.

I personally think the G37's exhaust kicks the G35 exhaust's butt. I love the roar from the HR engine versus the "exotic" sound from the G35.

What's interesting is that it's much easier to get a "performance" note out of a maxima or altima than a G35 or 350z. This makes me sad...
