California testing...failed smog test @ 15mphgross polluter @ 25mph

results:...............NO (PPM)......CO (%).....HC (PPM)...%O2.......%CO2....RPM....RESULTS15mph....1389 MEAS..... 0.62........ 163...........0.3..........14.5.....1799 FAIL25mph.....242 MEAS......7.17.........264.......... 0.0..........10.4.....1960 GROSS POLLUTER

also, Pass EGR Visual N/A EGR Functionaldoes this seem right? I dont want to see my baby get raped by some shlop rock smog tech...please help me understand why my CO% would jump from 0.62 to 7.17 based on mph increase

i told the smog tech that i usually do the basic tune up prior to running smog test ie spark plugs, oil and air filter change eccetera...smog tech responded by informing me that things like spark plugs and basic tune ups have nothing to do with my car test failure. he said basic maintenance is a rip off so dont waste my time. obviously i chose the wrong test center...i know damn well better how important the basics are...really all i need is help understanding the true nature behind test results. i think i need a new fuel pump or fuel injector? please help!

hey buddy, iam from australia, and iam sure its not to different here.

but what we usually do it get our tuner to retune the car to a emission safe standard. you may also have to get a new cat converter.

if you do not have a aftermarket computer then iam not to sure what else you can do but try running someone elses cat. do you have a aftermarket exhaust system ?

I had the same problem with my 97. Im not sure what the difference between the obdI and II is. But I just changed o2 sensor and got a new cat.

Fortunately I do not live in CA, my condolences but they might be d!ck if you use a OBII item on an OBDI car cause then you'd have to explain why an O2 sensor is plugged up. OBDI cats' O2 sensor is precat and OBDII has 2 O2 sensors pre and after cat. And by how much are you failing your emissions? I recently had mine done last month and I'm at [15mph] (co%:0.002);(HC(ppm): 5); (co2%: 14.6); (NOx(ppm)39) (dilution%: 14.6)= all pass [25mph] (co%: 0.03); (HC(ppm): 5); (co2%14.6); (NOx(ppm):40); (dilution%: 14.6)TX standard is [15mph: co%0.76, HC(ppm) 136, NOx 104]: [25mph: co%0.73, HC(ppm)132, NOx 945]

It's a 1991 with 70k miles original motor, factory cats, and 3" HKS HiPower catback. To be honest I dont think new plugs will make a difference unless your old ones dont work at all. I regularly maintenence it and try to pump the same kind of gas to keep a fuel consistancy. I use shell supreme with the nitrogen additive they have to clean up your valves etc. You could try some engine cleaners to clear up your emissions but I dont know if that will help. Aside from regular maintence and proventive engine care I dont know what you could do last minute to fix your emissions, seeing how engine cleaners and the like take a few thousand miles to clear up the internals.

This is for extreme situations where you cant get it to pass when you have tried everything else (the rx7 guys love to do this) He might as well fix the problem right instead of tricking it.

Is there anything wrong with your car? how does it run? I assume we are talking about an s13 here, if you havent done so then the cheapo bosch universal 1 wire o2 sensor helps a lot if it hasnt been replaced in a long time and its only like 20 bucks! For your sake hopw that you dont need a new cat because cali has this new law that exhaust shops can only sell a certain kind now and its much more than the $99 installed ones you could get a few years ago.

I have spent a lot of time and money fighting the smog nazis here with some of my past cars, it really sucks!

Edit: On the EGR question, I believe that they can only visually inspect the egr, no way to test it on our cars (im pretty sure, correct me if wrong please). You should check that also because if its clogged up and not working then it would make your No gasses higher.
