I would suspect that almost nobody is. Why would you use premium or even mid when the car was designed to run on regular? This has been discussed in several threads.

Yeah, do a search on "octane". I think there's 4 topics on the issue. The cars were designed to run on 87. Any higher and you're donating to the oil Exec's yearly bonus with no benefit to you.

You're not getting better fuel economy. There's several reasons why, but if you want to convince yourself, conduct a statistical experiment

I run mid-grade here. Only because it is 87 octane & the manual doesn't say to run 85 octane at higher elevations.

Can't complain to much. 33-37 mpg in the Versa vs 12-16 in the Xterra.

I just had a oil change recently and my mileage is slightly up comparing back to winter time. I know having the AC on during the winter time could be a factor and just wondering if the oil change could be a factor too? thanks!

Yes, oil can play in your MPG. Old broken down oil and sludge can causes excess friction in the engine. More frictions = pressing down on the pedal further to continue your same driving style. Type of oil can improve mpg. Numerous member have touted .5 to 2 MPG rise when switching to synthetic.

I would suggest that given all the factors affecting MPG there's no way anyone can attribute a .5 increase to a switch to synthetic oil. I'm not saying that snyth may not increase your mileage but such an insignificant increase could be attributed to any of a number of factors.

I would have agreed with you completely if I didn't see it myself. I have logged the last 24 fill-ups and only twice (long trips at highway cruise) did I see 35 mpg or over. Usually, it is 32-34 mpg. Since I went to synthetic oil, I have logged 35 mpg for the last three consecutive fill-ups. This is on my normal commute to work at 45-55 mph with mostlly cruise. I am still looking for other contributing factors.

On the gas grade issue, I agree with those who say that more than 87 octane is a waste of money. If any vehicle pings on acceleration, then go to the next grade up. Otherwise, save your money.

I had issues with mpg till about 8,500 miles. that seems to be about the average break in time.

89 or 90 octane mid-grade in the midwest is often cheaper that 87 octane due to either ethanol content or some issue with fuel supplies. either way, I use the cheapest one. I recorded an all time low of 19 mpg recently, but that included about 20 minutes idling with the A/C on and my normal small town routine of lots of very short trips and stop and go driving. It's around 30 when I'm mostly on 2 lane highways or the expressway.

I'm curious to see what my mileage will be like on my Colorado trip next week with trailer and the mountains.

If a V's pinging this early, take it back to the dealership and tell them to give you a new engine.
