I live in Hawaii and plan to replace my old hoses with silicon ones and replace water pump and perhaps upgrade the radiator soon…my co-worker said I should take out the thermostat since we don’t use the heater here. If I took it out do I need to worry about anything?

Just curious...Why would you want to remove your thermostat?

Not necessarily. The thermostat does somewhat restrict the flow of water even when open. However, increasing the water flow also means that it moves through the radiator faster and does not get cooled as efficiently.

The thermostat is in place to allow your engine to reach operating temperature as quickly as possible.

Don't mess with it.

leave it in...there are no gains to removing it, it was put there for a reason. i know my girlfriends car the thrmostst stuck open and it would never even reach normal opperating temp. the car blew through alot more gas. you know when a car starts up and the rpms are abit higher and then come down? your car will think it still needs to warm up...thats what i think correct me if im wrong (i just went off my observations and 2 cents not facts)

Hmm, I know you need to defrost your windows, because I know your windows can get foggy during the stormy days. And defrosting requires heat...(defog if you like to call it in your case..)

Your co-worker is a idiot. No offense to be given.

Thermostat is a functional piece of equipment which is essential for your engine to run efficiently. As everyone has said before.

Your coworker is obviously not a mechanic, and knows nothing of engines. Part of the reason for thermostats is they allow your engine to heat up quicker, and therefore reach optimum operating temperature sooner. Removing the thermostat means it would take MUCH MUCH longer to reach that point. Cold engines are inefficient, and do not run as well. It also shortens engine life. Leave the thermostat in

Nothing to add.

Leave it alone. That type of old-school thinking doesn't apply to anything built after WW2.

If you're having problems with overheating there is a low temperature thermostat that opens up at 68 degrees C (the stock opens at 76) but under no conditions should you consider running with no thermostat in place.

Water wetter, silicone hoses, high pressure radiator cap, air diversion panel (and maybe the low temp thermo) you should be all set.

(And look at the Boss sneakin' that post in before me like a ninja! )
