The thing that really kills the R33 for me is the C-pillar. It looks so...wrong. The sedan looks fine, but when Nissan adapted the coupe version they did so in a way that made it look stretched but also fat. It almost looks okay from certain rear angles, but from a front-quarter view it looks like the car was put through a taffy puller or something.
Despite being a coupe with a rakish backlight, that angle makes it look like the rear axle is completely behind the c-pillar/decklid vertex. Of course, the sort of "blahhhh" moderncurvy not-really-a-vertex-at-all c-pillar-into-decklid transition doesn't help there, and neither does the fact that the decklid sits on top of the beltline like a sort of ninja-stealth bangle-butt.
All of that adds up to a car that looks fat, not sleek. The R32 and R34 are chiseled with sharp c-pillar and decklid. So seen from the same angle as above, there's a clear c-pillar terminus...it doesn't look like the rear wheels are behind the c-pillar.
Of course, I wasn't a fan of ANY of Nissan's mid-90s roundcars.
And I hate 2-door sedans of any kind. All that empty space behind the door looks horrible. Put the damn door back and fill it in. Sedans are sedans and should have 4 doors.
