That guy is wrong. Longer runner is unquestionably better for low-end torque. He's just backward.

That pic actually NEVER shows runner length changing. It's all intake resonance tuning, which is sort of a different way of achieving the same thing. It's basically intake airflow tuning using variable valving. The short runner never gets closed off.

Lots of modern cars have resonance tubes on their intake tracts. Some of them are not even directly attached to the manifold. The purpose is different from a variable length intake runner.

yeah... apparently no one understands that damn diagram properly lol.... even the bimmer guys are like WTF?

i think i've lost all faith in anything BMW provides.... we've had to reverse engineer so many things on the damn E46's we f*** with.... BMW is full of clowns

I'm slowly grasping it:In the first pic, it seems to coincide with what MoD said, and then it does something special where it opens up the top intakes to do some sort of air bounce effect that kinda looks like it jump starts a process that helps keep a high amount of volume in it's resonance tubes. Kinda like a circuit race of air inside that's first started from the bottom end, then shoots up to get quick breathes then opens up the bottom for a bit and opens up a gate to start a circular effect inside itself, the shoots the top again to keep it going by having available air in the recesses of it's tubes.

all i know.... is that i'd kill for my firends E46.... we've done a lot to it from the coilovers with upgraded springs.... sways... adjustable endlinks.... catless header install.... full engine rebuild with parts from 3 different engines.... overall its one of the best handling track cars i've seen.... yet somehow i can still run identical times in my truck

i'll actually be running quite a bit faster than it on my new tires.... but thats not really fair cause my tires will be far superior to his

I'm curious if I understood the diagram.Low RPMs the bottom end opens up for better power, then as it's approaching the higher RPMs it opens up the top, then it starts a circuit of air by opening the bottom end again this time opening a front gate letting air come in from both the front and back of the unit creating a full circuit of air before returning to the top. Did I understand that correctly?

The M has a race cell filler in the quarter window, both have wings that are bigger than trunk.

The M says "Bio-Ethanol" on the side. Alcohol.
