So Got the 60k maintenance done on my 80k 91 2+2 na - and took it out for a test drive....Ran strong and true for about 20 minutes and then I noticed a very rough idle and hard to start when turned off (out shopping) - taking 2 - 3 times to start. Drove it home and it died, temp read normal while it belching out black smoke and surging prior it quitting. Pulled a 13 code off the ECU so pulled the temp sensor (after letting it cool), looked good but cleaned it anyways as well as cleaning the temp plug harness...Still nothing - wont start and ekking of strong gas smell.
Let it cool and it would start intermittently. Towed it back to the garage and they hooked up a old Launch z431 OBD1 and it gave off the same coolant temp sensor error with a cold reading of 68 degree C. The mechanic, confusing Celsius with Fahrenheit - said it looked normal. I tactfully told him the F conversion and then we tracked the problem to a faulty plug harness (if I wiggled the harness the temp dropped to 19 C). So a quick $30 fix (sensor and plug) and she's running again....but...
I know we can pull codes off the ECU but.... man .... those diagnostic computers are such a help in troubleshooting and saving time.... Does anyone know an OBD1 scanner for Nissans other than the Launch (those vintage ones are hard to find)?
