I was driving around last week trying to trouble shoot a problem I been having and was cruisin around town with no fans to see how fast the temp would go up. Normal driving at 10psi. both freeway and city and my stock temp gauge never read above the mark just past midway. I do have a Koyo but I figured that my stock gauge was crap because I should heat up more than that right? When I first got my swap back I had the stock fan with no shroud and I never heated up either but now there is a FMIC blocking all the air coming through. Am I just too cool?

Stock temp gauges suck if you have the need to know exactly how hot your coolant is. The stock gauge has been calibrated for such a huge 'normal' range, that as soon as it starts to move, you're just about to overheat. It's more like a warning gauge, than anything truly useful.

Yet with that being said, if you can drive around and it doesn't budge, your car is cooling itself just fine.

You often dont need the fans when you are driving on the hiway.

When stopped in traffic I would think that even with a extra size rad you would see some issues but the reserve heat capacity might have been large enough to keep you cool, until your got moving again.

Fred..:)

PS: Yes its true they are damped and often not real accurate but some deduction about neddle vs temp can often be made.

my car is overheating like no tommorrow at the moment here in vegas (were already hitting 110 deg temps)...i just put a 91-94 electric fan on the radiator...didnt help for squat...still gotta blaze the heater when the temp starts to go up...i just hope a fan shroud and koyo 55mm radiator fixes the problem...stupid hot weather

i dont think yours is completely a fan problem though. when was the last time you replaced the thermostat? you could also have a partially blocked radiator. im in az with similar temps as you and i have no problem cooling. my fan clutch, which i just removed a couple of hours ago, wasnt even working, which doesnt really matter anyways when the vehicle is going over 40 or so. you only need the fan(s) when youre stopped. i also stuck a 16psi radiator cap on it as well to raise the boiling point.

I have the Koyo with the Dual Flexalite electric fans. I have the temp settings on the fan thermostat set to the default normal settings and it only comes on after I have at a standstill for a few seconds. My factory temp gauge had never gotten above the midway point. I do have plans for a temp gauge in the near future, but this setup seems to be working great.

Electric radiator fans usually can't push more air than you get through the radiator at say 20-25mph. So if they're on above that speed, then they are posing a restriction to air trying to flow through the radiator.

I missed the part in the post where you mentioned that you are not running any fans. As other people have since mentioned, the fans only help when you are stopped.

well im getting a koyo 55mm and a fanshroud soon so im pretty sure that will remedy the problem...there isnt much air coming thru the radiator given i have a big FMIC blocking the air flow (and i mean BIG FMIC...like 55-60mm core that takes up almost the entire front bumper) no air flow plus engine bay temps of 150-180 deg on blacktop would really kick the piss outta the stock SR radiator WITHOUT a fan shroud

I have one for the SR. Has a hole cut in the passenger's side for the A/C receiver can. Shoot me an email/offer to [email protected].

NO you are not too cool, temp needle around midway is fine. If you are really worried, then hook up an aftermarket gauge and see what temps you really are running. Mine likes to run about 185F, but I have had it up to 220F before.

Thats odd, Im runnig prety cool also, my gauge reads 149 all day till I stop, then it goes to 160-180 range and beyond if I dont move, this is with no fan and about 70 degres out side, stock rad.Is my temp quage off or does it really run that cool?

try replacing the thermostat, you can use one from a B13 sentra SE-R (91-94 I think).

I run a stock sr radiator in my s13. And the only fan i have is my stock a/ electric fan, the car would get hot. BUt then i added redline water wetter, now even on 100+ temps it can sit parked running for ever and never heat past half way on the gauge. Give the stuff a try its like 8bucks.

I run my stock S14 KA radiator with stock S13 clutch fan and no shroud. I never see it pass midway on the gauge.

stock temp gauge will read midway to somewhere between 100 and 105C. At 115, it's in the red and you risk warping the head. Thats how crappy it is.

If you are running hot, I've been told, and I just did it today, we'll see how it works out to run a real lean mix of coolant and distilled water. like 80/20 or 90/10. I'm at about 75/25 right now (was 50/50), and if it seems to be working, I'll lean it out even more.
