Was going to simply post an update on my original thread (http://forums.g35club.org/zerothread/312836) but figured the specifics of the motor replacement were more interesting....

Quick recap... found the oil level super low in my '06 MT coupe with only 6500 miles. Took it to the dealer and they gave me the knowing knod and said "we'll top off the oil and then bring it back to us after 1k miles". Did so and they found the oil level lower than can register on the dip stick. They started the paperwork process of getting an updated motor for me.

Fast forward to today... got my G back after 1.5 weeks at the dealer getting its new motor. Had to ask some generic questions and found out some stuff others might find interesting:

- This dealer, the only one in Oregon, said they've probably done 5 of these engine swaps due to oil consumption.

- I was given a service bulletin regarding this issue. Reference "ITB08-002b"; applies to 05-06 V35 MT sedans and 05-07 CV35 MT coupes.

- They tell me that this was not a sweeping problem (obviously) but that they are aware of an issue related to piston rings.

- Total damage billed to Infiniti.... a tick under $8 grand! Thank god for warranties!

So now I have a practically new '06 G.... and for the next 1200 miles have to keep the engine speed to under 4k, no full throttle accelerations, oil change at 500 and again at 1k, blah blah blah. It's like christmas day in May!

does it effect the warranty/resale at all? i had a friedn who had a S500 that turned out to have an expired warranty because the engine VIN was older by 6 mo than the Body VIN.

Well done! I also received a revised VQ engine after 12,000 miles with my previous engine. New engine is torqy. What do you think? Also, Iafter 3,000 miles, I switched to synthetic oil. Has been great since then---only have to top off oil with about a a quarter of a quart between 3,000 mile oil changes---partly becasue I drive hard and becasue i flog the car--car loves to be flogged, but I have to be careful these days because of tickets. Enjoy your new engine.

The dealer tells me this has no effect on my warranty. Even if they didn't tell me this, I can't see why it would void the warranty anyway. If I were your buddy, I wouldn't take that lying down.

And resale? Isn't this a preceived concept anyway? Whomever I may sell my car to in the future will have to decide for themselves if this is considered a good thing or a bad thing. I was a little reluctant to have anybody mess with my car (dealer or not); was a little scared that once they tamper with stuff then gremlins might pop up. Will just have to roll with the punches though as I can't have the motor going through so much oil.To me though, if I were buying this car today, I'd MUCH rather be told "it's got a brand new, updated design, dealer installed engine" versus "the car has 7000 miles on it". Not saying the miles are a huge negative, but just about anything "new" usually is a good selling point, IMO.

You know, I really need to take some more pics of my G. While it was at the dealer I'm told that several other customers were checking out my car. I guess the triple black with tinted plus the billet top/bottom grills really stood out. I certianly like it!

I have a buddy that's a decent photog-wannabe; I need to setup some camera time for the G.

He did take some pics of the ferrari though.

Actually, this reminds me of a question. When I got this car, it had the following Vellano wheels -

I'd really like to see if these would fit on my G. I took one of the G's front wheels off and physically held the the wheel up to the hub.... I think it would look very nice considering the chrome would play off my front grill. Mind you I'm not a big "bling-bling"-type of person but I felt this was pretty classy-sporty. Anybody want to lend their opinion of the proposed appearance?

It sucks that the bolt pattern is just a tiny bit off so I'd need an adapter. Any thoughts on whether wheel adapters are a reasonably safe option? since these are 19/20's and I have sport wheels on the G, I should have to worry about diameter (only caliper/fender clearance I think).

What do you guys think?

when you get a chance, you should check out some people on the autopia.org forums to clean up that ferrari. im not on there because im in awe of their talents, but they can polish up that ferrari to better than new conditions. many of them refuse to allow the dealer to detail their new cars when they buy them, rather to have it delivered plastic covers and all. its pretty ridiculous.

this is what im talling about.

im sure there is someone in your area who could help you out...

your car is sex otherwise.

Had the same issue as you, noticed a grinding sound coming from the engine. Oil was really low, they filled it back up and had me come back in, sure enough burned tons of oil. Replaced the engine, about 3k miles more same issue, replaced the engine again, I'm at 20k now and it seems fine now but man what a pain in the *** with a new car. I believe it took them about 3 weeks each time to fix my car, looks like you got yours back much faster.

What year is your car and/or when were both these motors swapped? My hope is that the motor I received really is "updated and they have the bugs worked out".Was your a situation that they replaced yours with another "bad design" before they really knew there was a problem with piston rings?

Tell ya what, if I have a second motor put in, I'm selling it back to them. You are more understanding than I think I'd be.

mine is an 06, pretty sure the 2nd motor wasn't the fixed version, I was pretty pissed off about the whole thing.

Infiniti changed the manufacturer of the piston rings to solve the problem

Telcoman:

That is true about the pistons! However, i heard that it was also little more than that---something about replaced valve guides, etc. I am not sure but one service manager I met laid it out for me about 4 months ago--I can't remember the exact parts that were replaced.
