I have a 91 Nissan 240sx I recently just bought from a friend. I've given it a decent tune up since then, even checked and replaced all my fluids, BUT I'm still experiencing one major problem that happens two or three times daily if I'm lucky...the transmission seems to slip for some reason. Sometimes it's after I've come to a stop for awhile at a light and it just won't catch gears (takes forever) and one or twice it's been in mid stride and slips. The transmission fluid level it normal and I've even used Lucas stop slip, but the problem is still happening. Also...

I notice in the morning when first cranking up and driving the car seems to hesitate getting up to speed. Can anyone tell me whats going on?

if its an auto transmission your screwd..if its amanual transmission ..then it may actually be time for a clutch or you have air in your clutchline/fluids low..more info needed

Unfortunately it's an automatic...<---Screwed. So in the long run I'm looking at getting a new transmission...no other options for this scenario?

You could try rebuilding your automatic transmission, if you know what you're doing and want to spend your time on that. But yeah, basically your transmission done for. Chances are you'll be out some day and it won't go in gear anymore at all, happened with my friend's car.

Time to swap to a manual transmission. :D

Not sure about the sluggish engine, could be a lot of things, more info on that would be needed.

I can handle the basic routine things around a car like oil change, tune up, tires, and brake swaps, but I'm not a great mechanic to be working under the hood on engine work and whatnot. Not to mention I have no idea have to drive a manual...so got an estimate as to what rebuilding the transmission would cost?

I'm not sure how much it would cost in Missouri but in L.A. it can cost up to $700. Thats dismounting and mounting the transmission. Kinda high if you ask me. If in fact my transmission went out I would rather buy a used one from a shop and mount it my self.

If I was in your shoes I would take it to a shop specializing in transmissions and have a professional mechanic check it out. Then I would go from there.

Good luck.

Thanks, I just went and had it checked out this morning. As advised, it would be better and cheaper to try finding a nice used one to throw on there rather than rebuilding the f***er. Luckly for me here in Mississippi throwing in a new transmission would only run me $450. Cheaper than expected, but it still makes my bank account cry

I appreciate everyone's advice and help. Other than that issue I've just got to change my starter out...sometimes it'll turn over, and sometimes all I get is that annoying click. That is a starter complication, right?

Isn't the click the starter trying to turn but not being able to because lack of power? If a starter has enough power going to it but is not working properly (I think) it will make an ugly grinding noise. When it does that clicking try passing current to the battery from another car. I believe that if it turns then the culprit would be the charging/power system.

Actually I realized I made a noobish mistake a couple weeks ago when installing my new battery...I didn't tighten the damn thing good enough so it's only been getting half the charge it needs to crank.
