To be honest, I would pull it off and start from the beginning. How you are saying should work, but when it comes to something this touchy and detrimental, I wouldn't risk it. Just remember those timing marks on the back are just for reference. When you get all back on, count the cogs. Double count, after all the proper measurements are done, turn it by hand all the way around make sure nothing hits before starting the car. Any resistance, do not force it.
