I decided not to drive my Q for two days and when I returned to drive it it failed to crank over (my neighborhood mechanic said it sounds like it has no compression).

I recently took about a 1200 mile trip in the Q and on the return trip the idle was not stable. I had to keep the accelerator pressed a little to avoid it shutting off (this was about 2-3 months ago).

When I made it back home, I disconnected the EGR connection in the front of the engine compartment (there were two plugs I believe the one on the right was disconnected) and that seemed to have solved my idling problems.

I'm praying that my problem is just a sensor and was even hoping that the car was included in today's recall (but unfortunately it was not). What are the chances that it may be the crankshaft position sensor or angle sensor? I hope it is not the timing chain.

Any information is appreciated. BTW: When attempting to start the car it makes one sound AHHHH at one pitch but doesn't seem to be trying to turnover or start.

Thanks in advance.

I have no idea what you disconnected, but I can't imagine taking something off would take care of a bad idle. We'll need more information about your car and location. Mileage? Location? What was disconnected?

Just a stab in the dark here, but if you have over 80K miles, did you ever hear a humming noise from the rear of the car? If so that's your fuel pump. Do you hear it now when you first turn the key on? If not you probably have a bad pump that burned up the controller. That may also explain your bad idle...

In any case I think it may be time to get your car in to a qualified Infiniti Tech. for some TLC.

Heath

P.S. The timing chain issues typically don't go into 1994.

What recall? The CAS?

Is there a maintenance history for this car? Please let there be one and share it with us. I am sure everyone else is as mystified as Heath and has the same comments.

Check this thread. It is a long shot but my 94 Q was acting up and idled badly until it just quit one day. Turns out cheap plugs had lead to my pre-cats being melted into a solid mass. I won't go into to details, read the thread below. http://www.nissaninfiniticlub....30813

Guess what....I did hear a humming noise from the rear. Almost sounded like it was my speakers but when I turned the radio off it was still there. I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope it is the fuel pump. What is the controller that you said may have been burnt up? How much $$ do you think this will cost if it is in fact the pump and controller?

The car has about 120K miles on east coast. I'll try to post some pictures of what I disconnected.

Controllers often burn out, if a faulty pump isnt replaced soon enough and keeps drawing too much current.

The pump is a lot cheaper than the controller, for controller cost call, Joe, at 1-888-216-5328.

He is the parts guy in the largest Infinti dealer in the country, tell him you are a NICO member for a discount and a bit extra attention.

I called and got a $379 price on the controller and $229 for the pump. I need to make sure this is what is wrong. I'm probably going to have it diagnosed at an Infinity dealership and then repaired at a local shop if this is what is wrong. Any idea how much it will cost to diagnose the problem?

Another bit of background information the week prior to the no-start, I changed the brakes all around, rotated the tires, and gave it a new oil change w/new filter. I called myself getting it ready for the winter.

If you still hear it running, it probably isn't the pump that's causing the problem, though it should be replaced anyway. The '94 valvetrain is pretty bulletproof; I find it very hard to believe you would lose compression in all cylinders at once. Wierd things happen, but there are other, much more likely, possibilities. Have you checked all fuses, relays, and fusible links? That's the first thing to do.

Update-

The plug I unplugged is called the EGRC Solenoid Valve Harness connector. I also just checked the fuses and I found that in the engine compartment one of the fuses labeled Eng. Con w/ a 10amp fuse does not light up with the test light. I replaced the fuse and still can't seem to get any power to that fuse.

Anyone know what that particular fuse does? I can't seem to find it in the 94Q service manual.

Thanks!

I forgot to mention that I can hear the humming noise from the fuel pump when I turn the key to the on/acc position. Damn, it would have been nice if the fix was that straight forward. Still hoping it is not the timing.
