:tisk: so i first thought it was just engine whine through my speakers and turned my radio off and i finnaly figured out its from the transmission area its making a high pitched whining sound and sometimes (usally on a hill) it makes a a kinda grinding noise but it shifts and everything totally fine. any ideas?

Is it manual or auto?

Autos don't whine much. They just give up. More than likely its clutch release bearing going than the transmission. Had real problems with mine as the fork was J16. The box is A10 and the bearing is from a L18. Ended up using a new bearing from a L18, the L18 fork and the slave from the J16 and the slave pin from L28.

You said it shifts fine, but starts to make noise when you gotta put your foot down and or hit hills? Doesn't sound good,

Try to narrow it down alittle, is it only at higher speeds? certain gears? I had my rear end go out on a few rigs and it was a build up whine that got higher as I shifted through gears. Does it sound similar to that? Had a toyota with a bad rear end that sounded almost like a grinder on metal at 60 mph.

Also U-joints go out more often than transmission or rear ends and they tend to make all sorts of wierd sounds like squeeking and or vibration, easy way to check that out is to put your rear end up on stands, put the truck in gear with the motor off and climb under and wiggle the driveline, spin it back and forth, etc. Then pull it out of gear and pull the ebrake and test the other ujoint. 2wd carrier bearings go out fairly often as well and aren't cheap to replace, 4wd you'll have 6 to check, plus 4 cv's.

Often but not always the bearings in trannies sound like a nut rattling around in a can when they go out.

okay yea sorry i drove an hour through foothills up and down hills and it happened half way through and from third gear up it whined lightly the fourth a little louder and in 5th it whined really loud and 10min later the grinding started and it sounded like something in a can like you said. but today i drove for about 2 hours and i the 5min just before i got home it whined just a little bit
and as a side note when i felt the shifter bar it was really warm like the heat was transfering up throught it

Hard to tell really. I know that the bar on my shifter heats up after an hour commute and it's in good working order. Also noises do tend to telescope up and down the driveline, what I once was certain was my trans ended up being a ujoint right at the rear axle. If you can, try to get under there and test it out like I said, using a pry bar if necessary. Sometimes it's nice to take things like that into a shop for a free estimate (not a dealership as they'll charge you 100 bux flat out) It's never fun to replace good parts and still not fix the problem.
