So I checked the oil. Full, and still a nice golden color. However there is a ticking that I noticed this morning, while it was warming up in the garage. It was still making the noise when I got to work. I listened to it after work, and the noise was gone? Anyone have any idea what would cause that?

Hey Beaner,I've heard of "Pinging" from poor quality gas/timing issues. Where is the ticking coming from? When I took the G in for regular service I used a loaner 2007 G35 Base model that "ticked" regularly in the speedometer... you said it did this during idle... could it possibly be a belt????

Location of tick please...

It could be your AIC valve or your fuel pressure regulator.

It is coming from the timing chain area. Definitely not pinging or spark knock. Also, it ticks faster as the engine speeds up. So it does follow the RPM's. I just got back from dinner, and it was fine. No noise. However when my car makes a sound like that, it sets me on alert.

Sometimes the valve train can get noisy on these Nissan motors.

Maybe the timing chain is making noise. It's a Nissan trademark.

well here is the thing about ticking sound depending on where they are herd from can tell you what it might be. you said it was during idle and at warm up. well ive notice this same ticking and put my g on a lift and found the ticking to be the exhaust heating up and causing this tick. i also noticed when im driving well over 90 for a period of time it also ticks when im stop and at idle. that is also just the exhaust metal cooling. now if its from the engine compartment thats something different. during warm up i ntice that the injectors and valve train are very noisy and have a ticky sound. that noise normally goes away this is do to the cold oil not fully coating the moving parts. this is why manufactures recomend you dont rev engine over 2/3rds of the rpm range during warmup. and other than that its not a problem butif you are running anything under 91 octane you are get a spark preignition knock and this is bad for your engine. the vq engine is designed to run on only 91 or higher octane. hope this was of some help

Get a thin metal tube, 1/8" o.d. or so about 18" long., put a vacuum or fuel line on in. Use it like a stethoscope by moving it around on the engine. You'll hear all kind of neat noises you've never heads before, and you'll be able to isolate the ticking in no time.
