I'll say it again: Do a leak down test, and you will find out EXACTLY what the problem is. If you tear into it to do a head gasket and it turns out to be ring, then your really going to hate life once you get it back together.

Should be able to. When I can't get my hands on one, I hook the hose from my compressor up to my compression tester to see where the air is coming out. It won't give you a leak down percentage, but it does a damn good job of telling you where it is leaking to.
