I am not sure if its timing chain or heat sheld rattle, I was wondering what the signs of a timing chain rattle would be. The car has 170k on it and as far as I know the timing chain hasn't been changed yet, and I believe it is a common problem....Anyway, if anyone has any info I would appreciate it.

it would probably help if you describe teh conditions of the rattle - i.e. only on startup, only on acceleration, only on low rpms, gets quicker w/ acceleration, etc, etc.

Have you checked your tensioner guides?

well, its only lately that I have realized the rattle, so I will assume that it may have something to do with the colder weather. Also it is most prominent in the 2300-2600 RPM range. I dont think it gets quicker with acceleration, but it does get a bit louder. I have not checked the tensioner guides because I am a bit anxious about pulling stuff off of a running motor. I am also rebuidling my spare motor.... that is if I can get the damn intake manifold off.... But that is a different tangent. Anyway, what does a typical timing chain service cost? I am trying not to spend too much money on the motor in the car (because I need the money for the rebuild).

Typical timing chain service is going to cost you in the neighborhood of 4 to 600 dollars, depending on the labor hourly rate. It's not the parts that kill you, it's the labor that does. If you do get it done, I suggest getting the water pump and thermostat replaced while they are in there.
