ok, so Im curious I just got my AUTO transmission filter/gasket and I was curious about the installation of the gasket so I do it properly.. Last time I seen gaskets going on a car, I wasn't even old enough to drive.

I am going to drop the transmission pan and clean It out.. can I reuse the bolts that are already being used to hold the pan in or should I get replacements.

and the Gasket, I remember my uncle putting some goop on the area the gasket was going.. do I put this stuff around the whole pan and then the gasket on top of it or what?

sorry for the noobish questions, but I wanna do It right the first time.

You can reuse the bolts. You may want to put a little loctite on them before reinstalling. They get torqued to 61-78 inch/lbs, do not over tighten.

Do not put anything on the gasket. Just clean any residue from the old gasket off, and lay the new gasket on dry.

well I dropped the pan.. replaced the Filter and Gasket and refilled with fresh ATF and drove It around for about 10-15 minutes.. pull It into the driveway and go to check the fluid and notice that the dipstick only has a little bit on the tip of it.

What gives.. I don't see any leaking going on. I put like 4-4.5 QTs in it then, but still can't get a reading.

Just add about 1/4 qt at a time until it gets to the proper mark.

well I didn't do something right....

I went around this morning and checked for leaks and fluid level.. There was a very small drip puddle from the transmission pan. I made sure everything was what It was supposed to be and the ****in bolts started snapping.. so Ive got about 4-5 threads without heads sitting in there now.. son of a *****

I hand tightened then torqued to spec and SNAP.. **** this sucks.. I know there is fluid in the pan, but still no fluid reading... The dipstick barely has any on It if any at all..

I just ordered 21 replacement pan bolts and a new gasket. I hope I can get these busted bolts out since the heads are what snapped off them..

any ideas..??

Wow, I can't imagine that they snapped. You torqued to in/lbs not ft/lbs right?

I torqued with inch/pound but I guess It was to much for it.

Ive got about 6 missing.. and Im sure If I go and loosen the rest up I'll lose a few more.. now I got to figure out a way to get the broken bolts out of there spots.. They snapped at the heads of the bolt.. leaving the threads inside.

You can use an Easy Out. Something like this. http://www.amazon.com/Easy-Out...UJNWE

ok, I guess the Easy Out is my only option.. I remember the socket I needed was 10mm for the pan bolts..

How does the easy out work exactly, considering the threads are locked inside there spots with no bolt heads? Im wondering if the mechanic a block away from my house is capable of doing this when I get my replacement bolts/gasket. I don't want to screw it up anymore then It already is..

Thanks for helping me MaxHopper.. I kinda fubarred this job up.

Thanks Max, I don't really trust myself doing the extraction process so I ordered the Gasket and the new bolts and made myself a appointment with the local mechanic for Monday. He asked me how many of the bolts were missing and I told him and he was pretty surprised It wasn't leaking like mad. He also said he has left handed drill bits he can try and use, but If that don't work he's gonna have to drill and retap about 6-8 holes. I do notice a small leak from the front of the pan and Ive been keeping an eye on the fluid levels pretty much everytime Ive stopped since this happened. It's been alright, but yeah long story short.. Im a newb mechanic and I really screwed up a pretty easy job.

again Thanks for the help with everything.. I'll learn from this mistake
