Anyway I have been toying with the idea of doing the vh swap in my 240sx instead of the other options and it got me thinking of what all I needed to do to get it done. aside from developing mad welding skills, getting the a/c to work, factory dash, cruise control, and such to work like factory. I was thinking about using a stand alone such as aem ems to get everything to be happy with one another. The only thing is i don't know if a stand alone will operate those creature comforts or not, and on top of that i figure u would have to basically splice the vh and ka harness to the areas needed. so basically what all is your input of using a stand alone for the swap?

The ac will not work i can tell you right now.

Actually,There are only two ways to make it work

1st. Drive without power steering or alternator2nd. Cut hole in your hood, and have the engine sit about 2 inches out of it

Im investigating ems's right now, although im looknig more into haltec

For power steering, I've always thought about using the Toyota MR2 pump as they're electric. If you have to take the ps pump out for the a/c, that would probably be the way to go.

I was mainly just curious what you guys are doing for on-board charging power that don't have holes cut in the hood.

Honestly I dont really see the need to run a standalone. The stock ECU is almost a standalone as it is... Like gs14racer has pointed out, it doesnt take that much wiring prowess to get the gauges and stuff to work. If you're staying N/A, ive already got tuned ECU's ready to go. Boost ECU's are up next.

if you dont mind making a new hood with a scoop, then running AC shouldnt be a big deal...

Ive always wondered how JDM VH41's woudl fit into a 240. You can swap VH45 internals into the more compact VH41 accessory design.. The major thing is that the 41 alternator is on the top (sorta by the water pump) vs being on the side.

The wiring is similar to an SR swap would be if you didn't have any directions on how to do so...in other words, you're on your own to compare the Q45 schematics to the KA schematics and match up wires.

The tachometer will be off, and your speedometer probably will be too, depending on which transmission you use.

As elwesso said, rom tunes would be the easiest, but you can use an AEM EMS on it as well ;-) ::cough:: 300zx or skyline versions ::cough:: (you have to do some specialized wiring, and reprogram the cam angle setup, but it wouldn't be bad.

If you eventually need your vh45 tuned for boost, let me know. I am currently tuning a VH45DE in an S14 with a Garrett 72mm turbo.

you can adjust the tach to work correctly.

Pretty much exactly the same as my conversion. You'll find there's very little difference in the engine bay designs of R31, S13, S14 etc.

Also, it's not the accessory design of the VH41 that makes it appear more compact (although having the alternator at the top definitely helps), it's size of the cam sprockets. VH45 cam sprockets are like 120mm diameter (roughly), whereas the VH41's are like 80-90mm-ish. It's this difference that allows the front of the motor to be no wider than the rest of it, as on the VH45, the timing chain & edge of the sprockets sit much further out, therefore requiring a much wider front cover.
