Recently i have noticed that the puffs of smoke when i start off have been getting worse. it is a blueish white smoke . I know it is burning oil so what would be causeing that? I have 183,000 miles on my car could it maybe be time for a rebuild if so how much would a basic rebuild go for ?

Piston rings. With all those miles, they're definitely worn. Also, your valves might be a little off...from the sounds of it anyway. If you're going to spend money on a rebuild, consider trying a used motor with less miles on it. It doesn't have to be an SR or anything, but it beats the same ol' parts from the high mileage engine.

I know it sounds a little wierd but it is possible that a worn timing chain and/or guides could be the cause. I read on here a while back about this fixing the "puffs" for a few other people so I tried it on mine (140,000 miles on original chain) and it did the trick. I have put about 8k miles on it since and still no more smoke. It may be worth your time to check into this before you go spending a lot of money on a rebuild just yet.........
