Sounds like a potentially fun concept. I thought of Smash Bros. as well...
I'd absolutely love to be able to beat the ever loving smeg out of Master Chief with a crowbar as Gordon Freeman.
I think you'd really have to sort of make it at least slightly cartoony. There's too much deviation in gameplay styles from one FPS to another. Halo is completely off-the-wall unrealistic and intentionally so, while others are overly-realistic, and some sit in the middle. If not cartoony, then at least humorous and satirical. Give people special abilities (Freeman could have the crowbar, the Fear guy could have limited slomo or sic the creepy girl on his foes, MC could have his shields and sticky grenades, etc.).
The biggest problem comes in the fact that all the games are based on very different engines, and therefore have a very different feel. You would have to find the best of all and combine them. You could try to retain the individual feel of each character, but you wouldn't be able to properly replicate any single game...which would sort of detract from the experience of being your favorite character. Still...it worked in SSMB: Kirby doesn't quite work the same but I still enjoy beating other Nintendo characters down as the flying pink blob.
What characters do you have in mind?A lot of the more popular FPSs don't really have regular protagonists (since a lot of them are either multiplayer only or WWII games where "you" are the main character).
The ones I can think of off the top of my head, with special abilities:
Freeman (crowbar, HEV suit, maybe a limited army of antlions?)Master Cheif (shield, sticky grenade)The FEAR guy (slomo)James Patterson (from the original [and best] Medal of Honor)Space Marine (BFG 9000)Duke Nukem (shrinker? Size 13 boot? Freezer? Half-naked woman?)Quake guy (nail gun)Unreal guy (infinite ammo pistol? Not sure here...)
Maybe I'll think of more later...
