Lately, it seems when I start the engine cold (35F or colder), the motor shakes momentarily like a wet dog.

After a half second it normalizes, and goes into its usual loud "ERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR" sound. Not quite a whine, not quite a groan, just... "ERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR" until it gets warmer, then it subsides. I think its always been that way since I bought it in April, just got much louder and worse in cold weather... almost annoying. But it goes away more or less when it warms up.

Could bad motor mounts be causing the startup shakes? Its almost like a sputter. I recently switched from Mobil 1 10w30 to Castrol Syntec 5w-30 just to satisfy curiosity.

Drives nicely on the highway. There's some vibration but I think its from the cheaper ($76) new Firestone Insignia all-season tires.

Aged Q engines [+100k or abused like they have high mileage] may have some ring wear/stickiness so that some/ all cylinders don't seal well until the piston and rings expand from a minute of running ------heat.

The extra flood of gasoline at cold crank [when coolant is below 32-40F] doesn't help.

Really hard to judge whats going on till the engine warms up to at least 160F [that takes 5-10 minutes].

Going to bring a Consult home and try to log the start up and warm up parameters.

Could also be an injector that's not working right at cold start-up. I've had a "bounce" on the first start-up after a long sit (weeks) too.

The EEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRR noise is your transmission. They all do it when it's cold.

You'll hear it at start-up, especially when it's cold. It's a whine sort of like a F@rd power steering pump. Varies with engine speed...

I've never had one that doesn't do it (two cars, four transmissions, and any others I've heard).
