The VQ is not an easy swap into a 3rd gen. it can be done, but not easily or cheaply. You can fairly easily turbo the VG30E because it was available turbo.beancooker wrote:Unless you want to turbocharge it, keep the 3.0L they're bulletproof. You can add the VAIS from a 5th gen to gain another 35 H.P. You may also look into a VQ35,(350Z engine) there are a lot of aftermarket parts for them.
it's easier to just buy one that already has the motor. the swap is almost as complex as the VQ swap. only real difference is mounts. VE is available VQ has to be customMinisterofDOOM wrote:Welcome! I've got a third gen myself.
Your 3.0 liter makes something the SR only dreams about: usable torque. Keep it. I've got 212k miles on mine and it runs beautifully.
My recommendation for a swap would be to upgrade to the 92-94 SE Maxima's VE30DE. It'll run circles around the SR, and it should be a faily straightforward swap since it was designed specifically to fit in the third gen Maxima. They've got VTC and are DOHC, and you can do a lot with them.
the VG30E got a variable intake as did MANUAL transmissioned VE30DEs.the Variable intake was dropped as a cost cutting measure (one of many) for the 4th gen. the 5th gen got it back because they could get any more power out of the VQ30De without it and they needed more power to be competitive in the market.beancooker wrote:So the 3rd gen has the VAIS and thy took it off for the 4th gen, then put it back on for the 5th gen? Something about that doesn't make sense.
