Cliff Notes at the bottom. But read to see if my car is running slower than should be.

I got beat by an Eagle Summit. WTF?! Ok, first off I don’t condone street racing nor take part in it for most obvious safety reasons and because I know my 93 stock 240SX fastback (what and oxymoron) is pretty slow. But… recently I think it’s been running slower than normal for no reason, although it runs great mechanically, it idles fine, no smoke, and the oil has been changed religiously, and it only has 82K miles on it, yada yada yada. So I’ve wanted to run against another equal car to see what the deal was.

So I’m in the left lane at a stop light on a 2 lane road. The right lane merges into the left lane about a ¼ after the light. This P.O.S. white 4 door Eagle Summit pulls up into the left lane. The hood and front bumper are from a black car and don’t fit properly. The driver looks more than INCOMPITENT like the average 21 year old McDonalds worker. There’s a GIANT dual base box probably from Wal-Mart in the back, and generally the car looks like a slow P.O.S. Which it should be!

So the light turns, he launches and squeals the tires, I don’t because I figured I could whoop him anyway. I shift at redline like a dumbass every time, and his car sounds a bit louder which is odd, because I have the resonator removed on my air box and the KA is a loud freaking motor to begin with. He was dead even through 1st and halfway through 2nd, and that’s when he started to creep past and barely made it by an *** hair in front of me before the lane ended. But still WTF?! I looked up this car and these are the specs, ENGINE: 1.8L 113 hp I4, HORSEPOWER: 113 @ 5500 RPM, TORQUE: 116 @ 4500 RPM. Now how is this possible?! What do you guys think?

Cliff Notes:S13 240SX Fastback vs. Eagle Summit 4 Door

Nissan – Engine: 2.4L 155 hp I4 Horsepower: 155 @ 5600 RPM Torque: 156 @ 4400 RPM

VS.

Eagle – Engine: 1.8L 113 hp I4 Horsepower: 113 @ 5500 RPM Torque: 97 @ 3000 RPM

WINNER: Eagle Summit 4 Door

That's pretty bad!

Not a reflection on you of course, but man...

Well, look on the bright side; at least you didn't get beat by a Daihatsu Charade.

could be that you were running your engine to the red line I know my single cam has no balls after like 5500 rpm and if i shift like around 4800-5200 I can spin the wheels goin into second.

Hey hey, the 4 cylinder charades are actually pretty quick cars. I'm not sure on the numbers, but I used to have one, and could regulary take down civics and some integra's in stock form. Of course that's not saying too much... sorry to tread jack. I'm just saying that a charade would be harder to beat then that summit.

haha if that summit had a 4G63t, you would know it. I would take that 240 to a track to get a benchmark of where it's at. or at least do some rough stopwatch 0-60's. I would pull 7.5-8.0 in the 0-60 when I had my KA24DE.

here is question....

if the car is under performing.. what can he do to get it up back to speed. And by that I don't mean buy this buy that. I mean can he open the motor up and do things? Adjust the vavles? shave the pistons? add fire crackers?what?

I wanna know cuz.. well I am poor

I did some stopwatch 0-60 times and a lot of it has to do with were I shifted and not so much how I launched or how I shifted. Actually, shifting at redline (6900 – I’m afraid of the red) proved better times, which is odd. I also noticed some serious fluxation in power, maybe its time for a grounding system. Anyway here are the stats.

- Shift Point - - Gears used - - Time –- Shift Point -- 5200 - Gears used -- 1, 2, 3 - Time – 11.76- Shift Point -- 5200 - Gears used -- 1, 2, 3 - Time – 11.66- Shift Point -- 6900 - Gears used -- 1, 2 - Time – 10.07- Shift Point -- 6900 - Gears used -- 1, 2 - Time - 09.99- Shift Point -- 6900 - Gears used -- 1,2 - Time – 09.66

Sounds like time for a tune up. Start with belts/timing/cleaning distributor cap/replacing air&fuel filter. Replace oil and oil filter if it hasn't been done lately. I wouldn't recommend a coolant flush. I hear horror stories about attempting that DIY.

Ok, I don’t know to much in-depth about maintaining a car, i.e. replacing the belts, cleaning the distributor cap, replacing the spark plugs, etc. This is the first car I am responsible for owning and maintaining so if you could help walk me through this, that would be great. So, I need to…

- Inspect the belts, or replace them?- Timing? What do I check here?- I don’t know how to clean the distributor cap, but I can search .- Make a trip down to AutoZone for a K&N drop-in air filter.- Replace the fuel filter, I’ll have to search .- I just had the oil changed, do they change the oil filter at the same time?- Go down to Nissan and have all the flushes done.- Have Nissan replace spark plugs?

It's not really a fair comparison. If I remember right the 2.0L Turbo in the Eclipse GS-T/GS-X is 210HP. We are more in class with the 140HP GS trim. Assuming stock.

Then it's not the motor they are talking about. Unless it is a Spyder model, you have the Chrysler 420A motor. Not even close to the 4G63. The Spyder uses a 4G64 2.4L SOHC.

check the belts for wear and tear. use 2 screw drivers to remove them.

when have you last replaced your cap/rotor? if its been a really long time just change it. check the spark plug wires to see if theres wear or tear. use an extension/spark plug socket to remove your plugs and check the color of it. most likely it's black so change that too.

get some performance plug wires and plugs. frommaybe ngk and denso iridium should do fine.

yeah you drop all the oil then change the filter and fill the oil back up.

don't go to a dealer unless youre filthy rich if so send me some money =). those guys are assxxxs. always charge what 80-100 bucks for a "diagnosis..." right when you pull in.
