Let me first start out by saying that this is the first apple product I have ever owned or dealt with.. I have never had an ipod or anything else like that.

So.. I was due for a new phone, as the old one I had for about 2 years half the buttons did not work. So I decided to go big and get an iPhone 4... Might as well get into the new century here... :) ATT has pretty good service where I live, my family has had them for years and I've been happy with how things are, so I had no reason to go with it.

I have no idea how the best way to get apps on there, or where you get them in the first place.. I'll figure that stuff out later, but the most important task right now is getting all of my old info off my old phone into the new one...

Also, anyone have any suggestions on cases and/or screen protectors?

Since the directional pad on my old phone is broken, they could not switch over my contacts from my old phone to the iphone.. The bluetooth is apparently not compatible between my samsung A727, so I guess I cant import them to my new phone that way either... It seems like I should be able to enter contacts in somehow and import them from the PC, and I'll figure that out. It appears I could just make a contact list in outlook or something like that and import them through itunes..

What I'd like to be able to do is use the built in wifi in the iPhone to power an internet connection for my PC.. Anyone know if thats possible????

To do that, you have to jailbreak the iphone and install a little $3 app to do that. I dont know the details though. Try using the iphone to browse to www.jailbreakme.com

I dont want to use my cell phone service (3G or not) to get internet, I just want wi-fi.. basically I want to use it as a wireless adapter, just get wifi on my iphone and plug it into my computer to get internet... do I still have to "jailbreak" it.. sounds like there might be downsides to that?

If you got the time read up on jail breaking.

They are actually pretty ridiculous, with the amount of interest in the device and I guess how easy apple made it for them they really have things worked out.

I just got an ipod and did the whole jail break thing....
It is pretty painless and does not take away any functionality. It is also reversible.

If you do it, it may be better to use something like lime ra1n... I am not sure if the jailbreakme.com one is un-tethered (The earlier hacks would basically be reset if you ever turn the device fully off, aka tethered. Un-tethered hacks the device and it is done with until you actually go back in and change the firmware). You literally plug in the ipod then run the program. (actually with 4g devices you may need to back something up to keep face time... google this).

It is legal, you can still use the most recent firmware (seems like new firmwares are hacked within days) and it gives you access to a ton of extra programs and options.

Throw it at homeless people and small children. That's all it's useful for.

So, are you saying that your computer doesn't have wifi capability?

Alright, I believe if you don't want to Jailbreak your iPhone the easiest thing to do would be to add a wireless card to your computer.

That sounds like a marketing pitch. I'd challenge him to do that infront of you! Hell, I'd give him $5 to make it worth his while.

Ok i purchased mine a few months ago:
Best Screen Protector is the ZAGG Invisiheild they are 24$ online BUT
click on this link http://www.zagg.com/community/contest.php and sign up for the contest and they will e-mail you a discount code for entering, in my case i got 50% off so it was 12$ total.

This protectors sell around here in stores for 60$

As for the case i just have a regular case like this one :
Image

does the job and looks decent.

I only have a few apps but here are some good ones:
Ebay
TouchGrind (skateboarding game)
Cube Runner (free)
Light ( turns flash on so it stays on for use as a flash light)
trapster(speed trap locator)
Facebook
N.O.V.A (FPS like Halo)
Paper Toss (addictive game)
Shazam ( hold iphone up to a radio and it tells you what song is playing and sends you to i tunes to get it)

While the car thing is most likely a marketing gimmick, the dropping part isn't. I've dropped my 3GS from varying heights and the case was able to protect the phone.

Wes, as far as apps, here's what I have on mine right now.

1. Facebook- you can do everything you can do on the site from this app
2. Wells Fargo(or your bank's app)- most allow you to keep track of balances, transfer money, locate ATMs and such on the go.
3. ESPN ScoreCenter- keeps track of all the days top stories and such. You can also configure alerts for your favorite teams
4. Pandora- Internet radio at it's best.
5. AT&T Mark the Spot- geotags the area where you're limited in service or you drop a call so they can attempt to fix those areas
6.Netflix- instantly stream your instant queue to your phone and watch directly from your phone
7. Angry Birds- this is the ONLY app I have paid for. crazy addictive game.
8. Twitter for iPhone- yes, I'm a Twitter nerd but I love it
9. 5-0 Radio- it turns your phone into a police scanner. listen in to 100s of feeds across the country
10. Words with Friends- because i like scrabble, i can now play it with friends anytime
