Long long ago I had a Chevette. Drove it from Knoxville to Indy. On the way home, stopped in Lexington for a fill-up. While I was there, I topped off the oil.
Left the oil cap off, lying on the battery. As I went around the on-ramp (clover leaf ramp) I hear "bbbddrbdrbdrrrringtttt!" I pull over to see what happened, realized the oil cap was off.
Walked a couple miles to the AutoZone and bought a cap (young, didn't know that I could have driven it). Walked back to the car, put the cap on and realized that the cap had fallen into the cooling fan, shearing every blade off it.
Drove the car hastily to the AutoZone. No fan. Called all the local parts houses. No fans.
Guy at the AutoZone said he was from Indy and wanted to help a fellow Hoosier out. Called the local salvage yard, sourced a fan, lent me his truck and I went to pick it up...perfect match! Bolted it on, drove back home to Knoxville, got chewed out by my dad because I should have known that I could drive on the interstate without a fan.
Yeah. Those were the times, right there.
