I found my 2nd horn...not that it was really lost...sneaky

FYI...for anyone interested, I found my ('04) Pathfinder's 2nd horn.

I'm not sure why the designers/engineers decided this was the "best" place for a device that is supposed to warn other motorists, but I was definitely surprised to find it where it was. As everyone knows, there is one horn located just in front of the radiator on the radiator support near the passenger side headlight. Well, the 2nd horn is located behind the BATTERY, just under the main fuse block in the engine compartment, also on the passenger side.



I came upon this discovery while changing out the battery, as the OE one has just started to give up the ghost (not bad considering it is 7.5yo and been through CO and OH winters). To my astonishment, there it was, firing right into the battery (of all places). Now, maybe they did this for alarm purposes, so if a would be thief cuts the wires to the easily seen horn, he/she would not be able to cut the wires to the 2nd horn as easily.

So, for those wanting to add extra/different horns, you'll find the 2nd one hanging out behind the battery. Sorry, no photos of said discovery.

yes, I am replying to my own post.

Has anyone successfully relocated this 2nd horn that hangs out behind the battery? Again, I think it is here because of security/theft reasons if the alarm is set off, but I cannot confirm or deny this reason.

I'm sure a mounting bracket and some longer wires are all that's needed to relocate said horn.

Any good suggestions on a location? I could put it within inches of the one that is in the front grill, or I could mount it a bit lower down around the fog light area. I would think any area other than right behind the battery is an improvement.

One more thing, does anyone know if this is the high or low tone horn? I guess it really doesn't matter, since the horns are only a few 100Hz apart.

The one behind the battery is the high tone horn. I don't see why you couldn't relocate the horn - as you said all you'd need is some longer wiring and a place to put it.

my qx4 came with 2 horns in the grille and one more in the engine bay, for a total of 3.


The third one is good for security - the 2 in the grille are easy to kill but the 3rd would be a surprise for a thief
